While listening today, I realized that George's part (the major-scale runs and the bends) must be a Coral Sitar.

Discuss.

Hmm ... I'll have to listen to this with headphones, as my first thought is, "naw, can't be."

Doesn't sound like it too me... If I had to venture a guess, I'd say probably a Casino with a some interesting amp settings and post processing.

There is a certain "buzzy" quality to the sound - I swear I can hear a very subtle Coral-effect in there. I think most of it is obscured by the fuzz on the guitar, but there is just *something* there - I think the Coral's it.

According to George, as told to Dan Forte in a Guitar Player interview from November 1987, he never used his Coral for anything. Harrison stated that he'd been given the very first one because of "the Ravi thing" but Spencer Davis saw and asked to borrow it. He never saw it again until a couple of years later and by then everyone had used one.

Here's a link to a site that contains photos and captions supplied by George himself for the GP interview:

My guess is that his part in Hello Goodbye is merely a six string with a fuzz or treble booster.

The possible guitars it could be are either one of the two Epiphone Casinos, the "Rocky" Fender Strat, a Vox Kingston prototype (according to Beatles Gear, John and George used one) or his '64 Gibson SG, all with some amp effects. It doesn't sound like a Coral at all.

However, Lennon's Coral sitar wasn't given away to anyone. That MIGHT be the one, if there's any Coral on the track.

"The Beatles Recording Sessions" does not mention a sitar during the Hello Goodbye sessions.

It always struck me as a cheesey fuzz box.

Yeah, I think that's all it is. I isolated the right track and listened to it in stereo in headphones, and there's no 'twang' to the guitar.

This was under the thread "Georges Favorite Guitar". If you click the link and scroll down their is a picture of the Coral Sitar and a blurb by George saying he actually never played it. So i guess the Hello Goodbye mystery is solved.

Yup, obvious when listening to the Anthology version. My bad.

John, it begs the question what would Hello Goodbye sound like with a Coral Sitar on it.
