Just did this mod on my 4003. Used allen screws. Output seems about the same but now the pickup is abit microphonic.

Hummm mine turned out just fine. Did you break the magnet on the back?

Not that I'm aware off. I was careful with the install of the new screws and the cover and don't see anything damaged. I did notice some corrosion on the ground connectionloverickbass wrote:Hummm mine turned out just fine. Did you break the magnet on the back?
on the shielded cable and re-soldered that.

I've actually noticed the exact same thing since my conversion. I'm reaching a bit here, but I seem to recall some discussion somewhere about adding a bit of wax to the undersurface of the cover (overlying the poles when in place) to insulate it. I've not done so, but is that something that would help?Barlow wrote:Just did this mod on my 4003. Used allen screws. Output seems about the same but now the pickup is abit microphonic.

Yeah, I'm thinking about potting the entire pickup in wax to eliminate vibration.j.alderton wrote:I've actually noticed the exact same thing since my conversion. Re: Toaster covers on HiGains W/ adj. pole pieces
It is usually the cover that gets microphonic....what I would do is to use some white silicone (the kind that dries pliable and soft) and stick a couple dabs under the cover and then squish the cover down into it. It is non-permanent and won't mess up the pickup yet it will stop the microphonics from happening at least as far as the pickup cover is concerned.

Thanks for the recommendation, Greg. Could you specify where you'd place the silicone? Would it be where the pickup cover directly overlies the poles?soundmasterg wrote:It is usually the cover that gets microphonic....what I would do is to use some white silicone (the kind that dries pliable and soft) and stick a couple dabs under the cover and then squish the cover down into it. Can anybody verify whether or not it is necessary to drill countersink holes into the back of the pickup in order to adjust the pole pieces with this modification? Or is that just the case with the older hi gains? Thanks in anticipation!

I didn't have to in mine. Mine is a 2012 model. I think it's just the older ones.

Something else to try is to replace that rubber magnet with a regular ceramic, or even neo magnets. The rubber magnets are very weak. A stronger magnet would give you more top end and bite.

Hi ,
i found the look of the rubber gommets very good. In my opinion it sounds even a little clearer in tone when played acousticly.

That looks great, Thomas! Now that you have the look, soon you'll want real toasters on the guitar.
