the dimensions, handles and latches check out - but, i've never seen one from this period with such side supports, nor a retangular compartment (usually angled).
can anyone offer up an opinion/confirmation?
thanks.

The full form-fitting shape started in the late 70's. My first 4001 was a nearly new '75. The case had just end padding but it had the storage box. The company that makes those cases makes many variations with the same or similar materials.

thanks guys.
yeah, i think this one is a litte wide, and those side pads won't do much to help.
does anyone have an early 70's case they would like to trade for a late 70's?

Hey Bryce! What does your late 70's case look like? Pics? I may be interested in a trade.
I have an early 70's case. 73 to be precise. It has no fitted foam at all. It has end padding and some in the lid.

I've never seen a Rick in a case like that.
What is that bass?
Please make it go away!

yeah, the bass is gross - but that case is nearly identical to an early 70's case. same latches, lining material, etc.
differences are the padding and the shape of the storage area.
for comparison, the case of my '73:

From the look of the headstock emblem it appears to be a Toyota
Whatever it is, it's uglier than a mud fence.

You
really wanna know? Do you?
You don't really, do you?
Oh... you
do?
That, boys & girls, is a Westone Concord, first series, built in '81 or '82 by Matsumoku, Japan. This particular example is the US import, and has the Electra logo on the headstock, and was possibly sold as an Electra Phoenix. Electra's owners, Saint Louis Music, were the US importer for the Westone brand, although this exact model doesn't appear in any of the catalogues I have seen.
You probably didn't want to know that - but there are people on the Westone, Electra & Matsumoku forums who would wee themselves with excitement over that bass , & chuck the case in a skip.
Funny old world, innit?
Jon.

I can't quite see a headstock emblem, in fact I can't see a headstock at all!
