This is a tough call for me as I adore both LPs. Generally when I am going to grab a YES CD to listen to, I seem to grab GFTO. OK, Drama is always my first choice, but these 2 albums have some similarities in sound to me. Both of them are absolutely incredible.

I LOVE Going For The One. The only problem I have with it is that it is a bit mid-rangy and hollow sounding in some spots. Some of Howe's guitar tones rattle my eardrums.
And I wish Chris used his Rick on Parallels.

To me, neither albums are Yes' stronger works, but then there is the likes of Awaken, Future Times/Release, Onward, and Silent Wings of Freedom. In the end it would be Tormato for me.

GFTO, mostly because of "Turn of the Century" - Deep meaning for me, and I can't think of even one song or arrangement like it. But, I like Tormato as well and recently was able to ask Chris to consider re-releasing the song on a solo CD with himself singing the lead vocal. (No offense, Jon!)

GFTO is streets ahead of T, which sounds very whimsical in places.

Wakeman's "return of the century" makes this a great Yes album.

I'd like to hear that one on the next tour.

It took a while to hear through the heavily-reverbed sound of GFTO, but all the songs resonate deeply for me. "Awaken" has still got to be one of their finest epics.

Tormato certainly has its moments, but I'm not a huge fan of the "Harmonised" chorus-y sound that CS went with on much of the record - except of course on "On The Silent Wings Of Freedom", where it works a peach! The Harmonizer itself is pretty nifty in "Arriving U.F.O." however - it took me a while to work out that that's what that sound was in the intro/outro.

Plus, on "Awaken," you get two Ricks (though not at the same time) - Howe's 360/12 OS and Squire's 8-string potato-head. I've often wondered what he used for the fretless part, but no video evidence that I can tell from the various footage sources seem to point to anything in particular. Never even seen his alleged fretless Rick....

I think he had a Guild fretless.

Yeah, maybe it's the same one from "The Remembering" and CTTE. Curious though, as there's no visible sign of it (or anything else fretless) in the various GFTO "making of" videos that I've seen. I just always wondered if that's where he used the fretless Rick he apparently had.

being a complete yeshole ,i love both of these albums,but really would give the overall nod to GFTO,as there isn't one song on it that i don't love,can't really say that about tormato."circus of heaven" and "don't kill the whale" are not great songs for me. love the unharmonised thunderbird on "release release". oh,and yeah the live version of onward (with steve on acoustic) transcends the tormato cut.
