Alright I love my new "87 4003 but I need the cap and I like the tone without it as well so where do I get the cap (and the push pull) and a schematic for installation?

do I need to take any wood out of the cavity for the Mod?

thanks
Brett

Brett,

Congratulations on the Bass! On the push-pull, it is my understanding that fitting it to '70s and earlier 4000 series basses will require some routing in the control area in order for the pickguard to sit flush, and that no routing is needed in '90s and later 4003s. The '80s is unfortunately a major transition period (4001 and 4003 body-end adjusted truss rods to 4003 with current truss rods, phasing out of the cap, introduction of v63). My bet is that, being a late '80s bass, you should not need any routing.

<edit> I just read a thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=380223&start=15 where John Allgaier states that the Ric pot fits his mid '70s 4001 fine.... So it may just be early '70s and older basses that have an issue.......

Unfortunately, I can't see the Ric corporate site right now (down for maintenence?) so I can't opine re the part you're seeing. I'd advise to get in touch with Ric customer service for advice, or if Pick of the Ricks, Rhoads Music or the Music Connection are geographically closer, give one of them a call. They all have great reputations and I can personally vouch for Mike Parks at the Music Connection.

Just a couple of quick questions - there seems to be some speculation regarding whether your bass is a 4003, 4003s or v63:
1) Does it have dot inlays or triangles? If triangles, it's a 4003 - skip the remaining questions and enjoy that bass - it was a bargain! :)
2) Is the neck pickup located 1 inch from the end of the neck? If so, and it has dot inlays, it's a 4003s, which is rare and funky - skip the next question and really enjoy that bass - it was a steal. It could be a limited edition as well, but I'll steer clear of that for the time being; :D
3) Look at the tailpiece - there are a number of bars that run parallel to the strings over the mute pad. Is there a gap in the middle bar? If so, you have a V63, which is a brilliant - you should go to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=380232 and post your story there!!!!!!

Hi Evan

It's a 4003. And your right it's a bargain. It's funny, before I went to check it out the very nice gentleman I bought it from was unable to tell me anything about it except that it was immaculate and he bought it used in 1994. he said it was a 4001. I assumed that he may have been mistaken and he was. I didn't know what I was going to find. was it a v63 or a pre 73 4001 with all the collectables? as it tuned out I didn't make out as well as I had fantasized about but it's a GREAT bass. I'm sure I would pay around $500 more on the bay for the same bass so I'm pleased. now I will get the mod pot and have a ric to play for many a gig.

I will call someone tomorrow about the mod and get some advice, and tomorrow I will play my new baby at one of the USA's premiere rock clubs. The legendary Toad's Place. It should make the walls rumble!!

The link I supplied points to the pot/switch only. The cap you want is the .0047uF one.

I din`t have to route my 74 and 77 to fit the push-pull, but I had to remove a "tip" from the push-pull knob. good luck!
