hi Paul,

i seem to remember you posting a link to a baggage supply company that stocks handles, latches, etc.

of course, now i can't find it. would you mind re-posting? any opinion on which handle would most closely replicate a stock handle on an early 70's case?

My question is....when replacing a handle such as these in the picture, how does one remove the pins and how do you replace the pins?
Are there replacement pins for this type of handle?

The problem with these handles is that you can't "steer" the case when carrying it because of the flexible handle to case joint.

replacing a 4 -1/2" center-center, metal handle w/ vinyl cover. L-1970 looks like the best option (pg. 141).

there aren't any rivets on the old handles (unlike the re-issue cases).

i took a look behind the lining in one of my cases. essentially, the handle bracket (for a lack of a better term (i'm sure Paul can scoop this one up)) is a 'U' that has the ends on the inside of the case face hammered back >90 angle.

should be a fairly easy swap.

I know what you mean but some of the newer fitted cases for example have two bars with a pin or rivit through them holding the handle to it as apposed to the "U" shaped bracket. Is there any way around replacing the whole handle and bracket as apposed to just replacing the handle without the bracket like in the Ohio Travel Bag photo? See attached pic. Also looking at the pics in the Ohio Travel Bag Catalog it doesn't show any brackets...only handles....

Steve, a luggage shop near me (Aero Luggage Repair and Sales) was willing to replace the missing handle on my Ryder 1000 case by removing the old pins/rivets and installing a new handle with new pins/rivets, but I decided to use an 'emergency handle' (the kind with the strap and buckle) instead. You might check luggage shops in your area.

BTW the aforementioned shop did replace a broken latch on one of my guitar cases, and it was a perfect repair.

As to the Ohio company, I have not tried ordering anything from them, but I do remember that their website was down for quite some time a while back ... made me think that Internet sales weren't a priority for them.
