Had a very nice surprise last night!

Every Tuesday and Thursday night, I work a room in DC called Columbia Station with a trio known as The Cheverly Boys. Last night we were honored to be joined by 5 members of the legendary Blues big band, Roomful of Blues!

Roomful was in town playing at The Barns of Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA and called our pianist and former Roomful alum, Mark Stevens, to say that a number of the fellas were coming out after their gig and wanted to play with us. We played well after our usual time period and had a major blast! Here's a pic taken at around 2 AM this morning -

Hank, it was fun! Great guys all around. I finally dragged my tail in at 4:15 this morning only to have to get up 4 hours later. I'm not working again until Sunday so I can take a few days and recuperate but man am I a hurtin' dog this morning, though!

ROFLMAO!! You're killin' me, man!! I think that was just random cash pulled from the tip jar, or in this case, tip vase- nothing but the best acryllic wear for us. We get a base guarantee plus the jar and with there being no cover, we tend to make out quite well. We've reached $300+ in the vase on a few occasions.

Columbia Station is really a strange room and can be hit or miss in terms of draw. It's a shame, too, because in addition to our trio playing there each Tuesday and Thursday they also have legenday Jazz bassist Butch Warren working there Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Butch has played with many of the all-time greats including Thelonius Monk, Dexter Gordon, Stanley Turrentine, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson. He just returned to action last year after a long stay at a Maryland state mental hospital. He's still got it and to most folks on the street, he's just some old dude playing Jazz; it's a shame they don't understand just how important a figure he is or recognize his place in the genre. Go figure.......
