What is the smell that is rickenbacker? Im a decorator to trade so im well versed in Oils and acrylics but the rick smells is delightful im hooked!(im imagining all you folks sniffing your guitars)ive 2 ricks from 06 and 07 when does the smell ware off? Does the smell ever ware off? Ive many other guitars that im not aware of smelling before but im going to give them a smell test what your views? I may add im wide open to complete ridicule many of the forum members may reek sweet revenge here so give me your worst! Yeah that means you Brian(Tiger Tail)Medway!

Soctty, I've read this before. What's this all about? (You can tell I don't own a Rick, yet.) And I'm just dyin' to find out about this alleged Rickenbacker smell. About 8 months to go...(cue Tom Petty song here...) JimK

Scotty: I belive the smell is the glue used to bond the lining to the shell of the case. I've been known to open one of my cases just to get a fix!! Even my '98 360v64 and '99 1997 still have that distinctive aroma, so I would suggest it takes a long time to go away. Just as well it doesn't smell like cat's pee on an electric radiator, eh??

Brian won't ridicule you....... I finished a 90 minute MSM session with him about and your ago and I gave him plenty. So much so that I reckon he wouldn't be prepared to throw any for fear of getting some back!!

Could also be the Turtle Wax they polish with. But the case is what everyone refers to as Ric-O-Smell. I wouldn't mind Ric-O-Smell cologne.

You guys make it sound like it's almost a legal way to get stoned!

Dang.... I would just go absolutely wild if my hubby bathed himself in Ric-o-smell cologne. For us Rickaholics, that's a pretty strong aphrodisiac!

....But then, so is a new Rickenbacker!

I've purchased a couple of Rics new, but the most distinctive smell of any was the 4003 DCM I had. Can't describe it, it smelled good, but it was unlike any of my other Rics.

Rick O Smell cologne, aphrodisiac and drug of choice....kinda reminds me of the Leadbelly song the Byrds recorded:

That smell has changed over the years; my 370-12 RM arrived smelling of a not quite cured finish,a paint type smell.Slightly sticky as well.It went away in a few weeks.
The case had no smell of it's own.
The current new smell can last a long time,if the case seldom gets opened.There's stll some smell in the new 4003 I got in fall '06.It doesn't come out often.

You're spot on, Bill. The DCM smell is not as sweet in comparison and is a tad pungent.

True.... When I had my DCM's I kind of thought they smelled slightly like nail polish. The smell I'm talking about is the sweet intoxicating aroma that hits me every time I open the case of my 1997 or my 381v69.... RIC really should bottle that scent! But then maybe people wouldn't buy as many new guitars????
