Rusted Front Bumper

Curmudge: My wife has scraped the front bumper of the truck just enough to have the rust process begin. How can I best remove the rust and touch up scrapes to the chrome in an area about the size of the palm of ones' hand?

Peter, unfortunately, even a rudimentary neutralization and touch-up is going to cost about $60.00 in materials and shipping. This will still leave you with a silver painted patch on an otherwise chrome bumper.

If you want it to look pristine, there's only one way--exchange it for a replated bumper. A local bump shop should be able to help. $200-300 if you do the work yourself.

...Sometimes there are no easy answers...

Paul: Please describe the less than pristine method. This is a working truck, I just do not want it to rust.

Steelwool and clearcoat.

Peter, then you can sand or grind away the rust and paint it heavily with Rust-Oleum in silver or any color you choose.

My $60.00 way is to use Por-15 to neutralize and convert the rust, and Sterling Silver to paint the area.

Both available at http://www.por15.com

Thanks, Paul. I appreciate these options.
