I did - rest assured I will let you know if there are any offers on it at all. One fellow has offered to make payments, but I'm not too keen on that.

A general question for the masses - Is $1500 - $1700 a good price for a '75 4001? It's supposed to be in top condition, but I have not yet seen it.

Top condition? Then definetly yes, especially in light of the recent increases. I paid a bit less for my late 75/ early 76 (no s/n) a few months ago, but there was a Badass II on it. What you will immediately fall in love with is the neck and tone. As Jeff says, bypass the .0047uF cap on the neck pup circuit. I never thought I'd say that, but with the lower wound high gain pups from the 70s, though phenomenal sounding, the cap makes it just too thin sounding. Uncapped, it just doesn't get any better. Congrats on a beautiful bass that shows flamed maple in the neck and probably great maple in the body too - can't tell from the washed out picture.

I paid about $1700 for my 1978. In retrospect, the price was a little bit high, but it was in near-new condition. It had been in a case for almost 18 years. Another Mapleglo sold for around $1300 on eBay a few days after I did my deal, but it was not in quite as good condition. I am biased, but I think $1500-1700 is a fair price for one in very good condition. Assuming it comes with that case, I would go for it.

I feel compelled to get your Dargie to help fund this acquisition! The 4001 is exactly what want when I think of classic Rickenbacker tone. It may very well be my go-to bass from now on, though I've been thinking about what Jeff said about still gigging my 4005.

My 75/76 4001 is my favorite for feel and tone - over my much modified RIC-Maxima flats/RIHS 4003, my V63, and my 4003S. It has THE TONE!

Thanks for the input you guys. I'm picking up the bass tomorrow. I'll post some photos as a way of thanks for helping with the decision.

Nice!! It looks just like my May 1975 mapleglo 4001, although mine has been knocked about and worn out a lot more than that. I bypassed the .0047uF capacitor on mine and love the weightier sound I get.
