Doing "Memphis Soul Stew" we'll start this thread with the great King Curtis and The Kingpins......Ain't THAT a groove?!

George, you've just touched on a subject that's very near and dear to my own heart! I'm a hard core Memphis Soul freak, especially when it comes to the band that put the "Memphis Sound" on the map - The MGs. I play their music every day while at home, be it as the recording group or as the backing band to artists such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Albert King, The Mar-Keys and countless others. Plus we can't omit the mighty Hi Ryhthm Section of the Hodges brothers who played behind Al Green, Ann Peebles & Syl Johnson to name but a few - those two bands are about as greasy as it gets!

Cropper was a huge early infulence on me as a guitarist, and as a bassist, Duck Dunn is only second behind McCartney as an influence..... only reason being is that if not for The Beatles, I never would have wanted to play an instrument!

Can you find a clip from the Stax Review in Norway, 1967 to post here??

Thanks for that, G. Man, to this very day Otis is the only male singer that can bring tears to my eyes. Such raw emotion and honesty in his voice. Seeing the Wattstax bit brought back a flood of memories from when my buddies and I would sit and just spin the LP over and over listening to the Bar-Kays, Albert King, The Soul Children, The Staples, Rufus and Carla and "Black Moses"; Isaac Hayes. If I had only one type of music to be stranded on a dester island with, it would be this!

"Green Onions" Love it! I fell in love with the Hammond B-3 because of this tune.

Well, Jim, if you've got $10K, you can buy Booker T's original B3, with its pair of Leslies. For sale at Bananas Music in San Rafael, CA.

All three pieces are in working condition but incredibly beat-up.

Although I've seen that video from Norway before, I still expect Duck to throw his neck out of place. I've tried it. It HURTS!

Whoa, wouldn't have expected Steve and Duck to be using Marshalls!

Supplied backline in Europe. I've seen film and pics of them playing through Standells, Fender and Ampeg respectively and a few others like Selmers and they always sounded like themselves. I think the tone Cropper was getting through those Marshalls was really sweet! I could nail that tone with my old Esquire and the little 18 watt Marshall I have here; very nice!

There is a live cut of Green Onions on the Stax Profiles series Booker T cd that is over the top. It flies at a fast pace that takes the song from its slow groove into uncharted territory and it sounds as though Cropper and Dunn are about to blow the Marshalls that they're using. If you haven't had a chance, check it out.
