HI

Im new here and am seeking advice on putting right a few problems ive got with my bass ...
hopefully someone can help! I must point out that this intrument was trashed through nothing
more than over-use ...

firstly, the nut has come loose and moves freely from side to side ...
can anyone advise the best method of gluing this in place? best / most appropriate glue to use?
i guess some people might tell me to take it in somewhere for this but im not a rich man
so if i can avoid that it would be handy!

secondly, the neck pick-up has all but packed in ... i was told some time ago that sometimes
pick-ups do just give up the ghost. is this true? there is signal but it is quiet ...
IS the pick-up likely to have given up? is there anything i can do to check?
if its necessary, what would be a decent pick-up to replace it with? again, im no rockafella
so would prefer an inexpensive but good quality suggestion if anyone has one ...
(and isnt that what everyone wants?!?)

the switch has packed in and wont stay in the lower extreme (it pops back) ... any advice
on replacement ?

lastly, the jackplate ... i have lost several of the screws holding the thing in place ...
i would like appropriate ones that are 'in keeping' ... can anyone advise?
also, the inputs themselves are intact but i have lost the nuts ... are they standard?

sorry if anyone of these questions are schoolboy embarassing but i need help!

The nut can be put back into place with Elmer's glue or better yet, Titebond yellow wood glue. Some folks use super glue, but this can be messy and perhaps a bit too permanent. Loosen the strings a good bit, re glue the nut, and put the strings back on and tighten a bit to hold the nut in place overnight.

PIckup--there are no cheap alternatives. A new pickup could run you around $100-125; used ones can be found (perhaps here) for about $50.00. Maybe someone will gift you or give you a good deal...Forumites? Anyone want to step up to the plate?

The screws are available on the RIC website boutique and nowhere else. Part #05200, at 50¢ each. But you'll have to order some other stuff, as there's a minimum.

Oh, and the switch...if you remove the guard, you will see that with a bit of judicious bending with a small needle-nosed pliers, the switch tab that is slipping can be bent back into place.

The nut on my v63 is loose too. But it's stable when I have my bass stringed (or strung , my grammar ).
Should I use some glue? It's not really a problem for me..

Yes. With a more solid contact, your sustain will be better.

ive found titebond wood glue but nothing about any yellow variety ... is there something
particular about that type?

i have found the screws on the website ...
at risk of sorely embarassing myself, are the correct nuts listed on
that site too? if ive got to bump up my order i may as well get them too ...

Titebond is generically termed an "aliphatic resin (AR) glue. It is creamy yellow in color. The link you provided is for hide glue, which is fine if you're building acoustic guitars, but not good for this purpose. In a pinch, Elmer's glue will do, though, and it's available nearly everywhere.

Regarding "nuts and washers": the jackplate doesn't use any, unless you're talking about the ones that secure the jacks in place. These can come from an electronics factor; be sure you buy genuine Switchcraft (American-made) parts, as Asian ones are threaded differently. The washers are internally-threaded lockwashers for 3/8" bolts, hardware store for these.

Yes this will work.
You don't need much and any excess can be cleaned up with a water dampened cloth or sponge.

Also our own Sergio may be able to fix that neck pickup for you.
It could be a bad connection making it weak or it may need rewinding.

On the screws - the boutique won't ship outside the USA and Canada, and US dealers can no longer ship parts offshore, so you'll have to order them locally through the distributor (Rosetti?) or a Ric-savvy dealer. Alternatively, maybe one of the US members of the forum either has some or can pick some up for you.

Hi Danford. Yes, some pickups do go "on a permanent strike". As for this neck one, I believe a rewind is in order. I live not far from you: Lisbon, Portugal. If you care to send the defective pickup my way, I'll fix it in no time. Cheers.
