I need a mute assembly for my 72 4001. Should I just buy a new one?
I have the thumb screws/mini nylon washers - what else do I need? Thanks!

A new one will work just fine, they have not changed except perhaps for the width of the foam pad itself. If you do use the mute you might want to trim the pad down as they do tend to make the intonation go sharp.

Is ther a brass thing under the pad? What do the thumb screws screw into? I know there are springs too.
Where should I order this stuff? again, thanks!

The mute assembly has a steel (I think) plate with threaded holes on the end for the adjustment screws. You will have to solder the ground wire to the plate (there should be a wire coming from the control cavity through a hole to ground the tailpiece). The springs go between the plate and the underside of the tailpiece.

Where can one acquire such parts? I just looked around and can't find them in stock anywhere. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys. A friend found one in his parts drawer for me so I am set.
I remember I had a bridge mute rattle off the thumb screws once - does anyone brace their mute with a little foam underneath? Is this a bad idea?

It shouldn't rattle if the springs are in good shape and anen't mashed too far down so they won't return.
As far as the foam pad goes I've used the newer, wider ones from RIC.
I cut them in half lengthwise and then I have two.

That was easy - all the parts were given to me and I just installed/grounded it. Nice to see that hole filled with the mute.
