Two questions: Is that thing for real, and if so, where is it now???

Photoshop. Click on the photo. The sitting gentleman on the left appears to be Toots Thielman, while the standing beuty on the right is holding the custom guitar built by Roger Rossmeisl that's visible in on the of the 1950s gallery photos. Around each figure one can see the telltale blurred halo that indicates that the images have been Photoshopped in.

the background shift around the headstocks are a dead giveaway too, as is the red blur on her shoes and the choppy cut job on Toots' hair at the top of his head.

Yeah, you can see the red outline around her where she was pasted in. Too bad.
