One of the rarest, if not the rarest, would have to be the 4005 Lightshow. Maybe five or so produced?

What is the most expensive Ric bass
Is that the highest price asked, or the highest sold price?

The NOS 64 4001 bought a couple of years ago might be close. The seller was asking $25,000. I don't think that was the selling price, but it wasn't cheap either!

Like John mentions the 4005 LS must be up there, apart from prototypes...

Well, according to Richard Smith there were about six 4001-6 string basses made in 1965, of which none have surfaced. There was also a 4001 made with a 30" scale in 1970-71....the 4005 short-scale bass as well.

And, as Peter has demonstrated, ANY left-handed Rick bass from the 60's.

Wonder if Allan is referring specifically to the special edition basses...

I'd have to think the Redneck is the rarest there...for sure

Well, it's very recent, but I think it could qualify as "rare", since it's a prototype and the first 75th Anniversary instrument ever produced. It's my 75th 4003 (the one with the see-through DCM paint and the single-color TRC):

I suppose, as with anything Rickenbacker, time will tell...

That one-off 4003 that RIC sold through Ebay a few months ago is certainly rare.

If you're going with "most expensive" RIC bass, then that would have to be Paul's 4001 that he sanded off the edge on the horn and used from about 1967 to 1988. That baby is priceless but if sold would easily fetch above $100,000.

The rarest? It could be any one-offs, so I will say the Garbage bass, since there is only one of them.

I had (and sold) a '67 4005/6 about 10 years ago... I think the guy lived in the San Diego area. Wish I got more for it, but don't miss it- the thing was HUGE. I'd rather have my 4003S back I foolishly sold last year:(

I almost bought that 30" scale 4001, sight-unseen. It was in a shop near London IIRC; unfortunately they didn't take credit cards at the time and I didn't have the cash. It was mapleglo IIRC. I didn't realise it was a shortscale when I rang to buy it. I think it was £895; this was probably around 1994 or so.
