What a great sound on that Rick especially on the lead part.
Anyone know what the bass is on the second song?

You can see the guitar a little better on this song. It appears to have 381 carvings. What is this guitar?

A late 50's capri, it's got a wider waistline and a deeper body than the 330/360 models that followed. Not to mention that that video is apparently from 1960, so it must be a capri.

At 0:20, the guitar appears to have a ridge along the edges of the body like a 381. Am I just seeing the sunburst? You can also see an f-hole, which I don't think was used until about 1964. Wes, your post may be correct, but these things have me confused, and I'm not an expert on 50's Rics.

I see "the carve," too... both at 0:20 and at 2:48 when I paused the video.
Perhaps it's a one-off that Rossmeisl made especially for Burton?

Turns out we're all right. It's the capri body shape with a beveled top. I didn't know that Rick made a 381 before the late 60's, but they made a few in the late 50's.

that's a nice old guitar but the sound doesn't match the guitar. it is sound of telecaster or esquire. you can also see burton playing gretsch 6120 in one of those clips and sound is telecaster as well. friend of mine - a rockabilly cat- asked james about it couple years ago and he said that james relied that he never in those days used anything but tele style guitars with extra light strings.

This is from the Ric description of the 381V69
Derived from a design dating back to 1957...

Ricky Nelson used to play a Rick acoustic too, if I remember correctly. Anyone know what happened to that?
Best,

The Rick acoustic was lent to him (and to Sam Cooke, too) for publicity shots.
Both are in the RIC collection in Santa Ana.
