I want to change the Strings on my 2001 4003. Ric strings are gauges 45,55,75,105

Everyone else is 45,65,85,105

The aftermarket gauge should go right on with no modifications to the nut right?

You shouldn't have any problems. I've used those guages before.

Having said that, though, I do prefer the feel of 45-55-75-105 on my 4003's. I've been buying replacement Rickenbacker strings online. Are there any other string manufacturers that offer 45-55-75-105 as an available set? It would be nice to save money and/or change strings more often....

I like the feel of the Original strings on my Ric too. Although I dont feel much of a difference with the other size that is on my J bass.

I do not change strings that often but have been noticing a little dullness with the 7 year old originals on my Ric.

I'll probably order a set from Ricenbacker just to have but I think I am going to throw a set of EB Slinky's on it or some DR extra life strings

I've ordered bulk strings from Musicians Friend to get the stock Rick guage...they've worked well for me, but some have complained that the MF bulk string are not that consistent. When you leave the strings on for a couple of years or more like me, it really matters not.

I am not a big string changer either!

I never changed the strings on my 68 P bass (2nd bass) I had from 79-88.
I changed the strings on an Aria I had in the 90's to flats, then changed them back. I think I still have the flats in a box somewhere...

I got my Ric in march of '01 and am just now thinking It might be time. But if I do it will not longer be Factory stock! lol

the Bass still sounds good, its a Ric how could it not right? but I played a new one in a store the other day and I could hear and feel the difference.... there might be something to this string changing thing the kids are into...lol

On my Midnight 4003, I have it set up to take the standard Rotosound RS66LD strings, but on my Jetglo, I have it set up with the factory gauges: 45-55-75-100.

I just love the feel.

The only way I can get those gauges is to by them all individually from D' Addario.

I love the Rickenbacker 45-55-75-105 nickel strings on my 1975 4001. I like the balanced tension across the strings and the fat E string. But as an alternative I'm currently using D'Addario XL nickel roundwound strings which I bought as singles. I'm using 45-60-80-105 which sounds and feels great to me, but they also do 55 and 75 so you could get the same gauges as the Ric set. The D'Addario strings have a similar tension to the Ric strings and don't sound too dissimilar. They are both fine strings in my opinion.

If you're into flats, Fender's 9050CL set is 45-60-80-105. It's as even and consistant as can be both across the board and up the neck. Very close to RIC gauges nominally, but of course being flats just a tad stronger. But with that comes loads and loads of growly tone that really compliments a Rick.
