Guitars you were HAPPY to get rid of!

Here's a different topic. Ususally we kick ourselves for getting rid of really cool instruments we wish we would have kept. Here's the opposite of that subject; instruments we were really happy to be rid of! Here's my list, in order that I rid myself of them:
-1970s Telecaster Custom in natural finish with a black pickguard and a maple neck/fretboard: I was a bass player when I bought it and I thought maybe I could learn a few chords on the thing or something, besides, the price was right. Someone had added a Seymour Duncan hot rails bridge pickup to it, as well as a couple of mini toggle switches that didn't appear to do a thing. I thought maybe they were for active electronics, but there was no battery hookup anywhere under the pickguard, et cetera. Not a horrible guitar by any means, but it was nowhere near as cool as the brand new Rick 360 WB I bought to replace it, which was the guitar I actually learned on and still own.
-Vox solid body teardrop bass: Unlike the ultra cool Wyman bass, the solid body bass had a neck as thick and wide as a tree trunk, which made playing the thing an almost painful exercise, especially as my regular bass was a `79 JG Rick 4001. When I bought it, the bass had been refinished in a medium light blue without any clearcoat(it still looked better than the original tobacco sunburst, I'm sure). The back pad snaps had been removed and the holes filled, though the pad was included in the case with the bass. At least I didn't pay much for it! I think I might have made a few dollars on the sale of that one!
-1970s big headstock Fender Stratocaster: maple neck, Olympic(?) White, Kahler tremolo(in black-yuck). What was I thinking when I bought it? I put it up for sale as soon as I saw a couple of U.S. vintage RI models.
-Washburn single cutaway Acoustic 12 string with built in pickup and graphic EQ style volume controls in white(bought on a whim, it reinforced my general dislike of acoustic guitars): I was ecstatic when I sold the thing!

A 1966 Gibson SG. I could not keep it intonated and the neck flexed all over the place.

an ampeg clear plastic bass from the 70's. what a piece of....let's just say it wasn't for me.

also, a jack casady epiphone bass with "issues" - the varitone/capacitor thing was shot, and could not be replaced, but i didn't really like the bass that much. in fact, i've learned i don't like big round hollow body basses that much in general...sold a lakland hb and a ibanez artcore after the jc,but they were both nice basses, just not my thang...i DO like my dano hodad bass,tho....

Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass - Worst sounding bass I have ever owned next to the Memphis P copy that I started out with. I've heard other Geddys that sounded better but mine was horrid.

Hondo 4001 copy
Bloody awful thing , bolt on neck, and action so high you could drive a bus under it!
It looked nice though, well, from 20 feet away!
Sounded terrible as you would expect and i could never get it to stay in tune.

a 99 black gibson sg i got off ebay last spring for $500 the seller said it was like new it took the seller 2 weeks to ship it after i paid with paypal right after i won it

when i got it like 3 weeks later it was junk i dont even think it was the same one in his pics the back of the body was scratched to hell there was a crack running from the nut about 3 inches long on the neck so i called the seller told him i wanted my money back and he said no way so i grabed the sg only having it for about 1 hour and was on the road to the local guitar center 60 miles away got there and traded the sg for a new gibson les paul studio in faded brown with burstbucker pups and it is the one i will never sell

God, my friend at school thinks Ovations are cool. He also said Rickenbacker was overrated. Talk about getting your guitars mixed up!
Anywho, I was happy to let my Squier by Fender Strat go when I sold it in May of 2002. I had only owned it for about 3 months, but I hated the thing.
A guitar I was sad to let go of at first was my Ric 325V63. I was upset I was selling a John Lennon Ric, because I had wanted it for so long, but my large body and hands said get rid of it. When I heard that our own Arrow201 wanted a 325, I happily suggested he buy my V63. After a negociation with the store, Gordon soon got his new guitar. I'm happy he has it, because he loves it and is very happy with it!
A guitar I was very sad to let go of was one I sold Tuesday. My Epiphone Les Paul. My second guitar, but I treated it as my first. I owned it since May 2002 (bought it once the Squier sold), and loved it. It was in poor condition, and there were lots of things wrong with it, but I loved it all the same. When I got my 2003 Ric 360/12FG, I wound up using that guitar most of the time, but when I was starting to get into the Rolling Stones in 2005, I noticed Keith Richards used Les Pauls, so I was going to make it the best guitar it could be. I brought it to my tech in June 2006, and after 3-4 months, it came home, and I played it frequently. But then when I got a Mexican Telecaster, the Les Paul went back in its case, and in August of 2007, my friend Chris noticed it, and played it. So every time we'd jam, Chris used the Les Paul for at least 5 songs. Now to the more recent times, I needed money to try and afford another Rickenbacker, so I decided to say goodbye to the Les Paul, as I never played it, and it rarely saw the light of day, so it's going home to a good owner, who will HOPEFULLY treat it with the utmost care.

Great story Jake many good guitars dont have to cost the earth my Fend*r DG20 a budget £200 guitar is my ole favorite i take it everywhere and i dont mind if it gets dented etc But as you mentioned about your strat and Mex tele these guitars can be extordiary good value.P.S tell your friend at school people change thier minds everyday about what guitars are good or not Tell him its not the guitar the plays but the player himself.A old saying is "Many a good tune played on a old fiddle"
Best regards
Scott

Ooh, thanks for the reminder, Scotty! I'd left one guitar out; a 1993 Anniversary model Ovation Celebrity, thin back, single cutaway acoustic guitar, again with a pickup in it. A music store owner friend of mine talked me into buying it. He got it to me at his cost, since I worked there part time, but I don't think I even took the guitar home. I opened it at the shop, played it, looked at it, and said, "what the hell was I thinking"?! It was a most extreme case of buyer's remorse! In keeping with the spirit of the RRF, and a wish to spare the feelings of Ovation lovers, I will refrain from further comment. My friend sold the guitar in his shop for me, and I didn't lose out on that one, which was nice.

Your such a nice guy Paul
The one and only reason i got rid of it was cause with the round back it kept slipping down when i played it.You know what i mean.Anyway nice to hear your story.
Cheers scott

There were reasons at the time that seemed to make sence but most I have sold, I wish I had back. The exception that comes to mind was a Hammer 51 Tele copy. A good quality insturment, it just had no soul.

I've never gotten rid of any of my gear. However, I do have a couple of guitars and a couple of amps that I am willing to part with.
