Flag on or off - that is the question

Paul,

They will probably peel off at some point anyway while playing, but would there be any problem you can think of leaving the RIC "Made in USA" pickguard flag on the guitar?

I recently got my daughter a Squire Fender '51 to start out on and when I took the factory stickers off the pickguard there was all ready a very noticeable discoloration of the plastic where the stickers had been. The pickguard was nice and white where the stickers had been with the rest a noticeable "vintage cream."

Not that I would ever compare a Fender Squire's materials or workmanship to a Ric (it's OK, I successfully fought back the verp )

Well--that's exactly the point...the resistance of acrylic to staining or discoloration is legendary...have you ever heard of a '60s Rick with a "mint green" pickguard? Even on guitars with substantial ambering of the original finish, binding and fretboard inlays, the original guards, though they may be scratched or cracked, are always ure white.

No damage at all is incurred by keeping the tag on. Personally, I remove mine carefully and stick them onto the case candy bag for safekeeping.

I don't know why--I don't plan on selling any of my Ricks!

I like to leave the stickers on. Also the hang tags on the tuners, and just for good measure I staple the sales receipt to the back of the body.

Yeah, I saw old Minne at the GOO, and she did have a receipt fastened to her back.

But I seem to recall that it was nail-gunned.

I thought only newbies left the sticker on the pickguard!

I peeled mine off and reattached it at the neck joint. I'll post a pic -- it doesn't look out of place there.

I think this question has been pondered in other threads. For me they come off as soon as I get around to it. The most recent went to a forumite in Canada. To each his own, I guess.

I brought the last new guitar I bought to rehearsal with the hang tags, PG sticker, and clear plastic over the PG still attached, and played the through tthe whole rehearsal that way. I removed the hang tags for the first gig, but left the sticker and plastic on the PG for another year before finally removing them.

Kind of like my wife and all the quilts she makes. She doesn't intend to sell any of them either. However, if she kicks before I do and I can get 10 bucks a pop on E-bay, I'll be glad she attached all her little labels saying who made 'em.
