Sgt Pepper after 40/41 years

I just finished listening to the LP of this album. It's been years since I've actually sat down and listening to it from start to finish, and I can't believe how great of an album it is! It's my favorite album, and Macca makes his 4001S growl! God, makes me hope I get a 4001V63 in the future!
Were there any other songs recorded for this album besides "Strawberry Fields", "Penny Lane" and "Only a Northern Song"?
But, for the record, who else thinks of this as their favorite Beatles album?

I've always liked Abbey Road as my favorite.

Its a hard thing for me to pick any favorite album not because they were all equally great, but because the Beatles went through (on my count) five distinct eras and its hard to compare. (Forget about the American releases which are something else altogether)
1) super-early: pre-EMI, Hamburg and the Pete Best era, and even including 'Please Please Me' which was an attempt to capture their live act.
2) early: 'With the Beatles', 'A Hard Days Night', 'Beatles for Sale', 'Help!"
3) transition: 'Rubber Soul' and 'Revolver'
4) studio creations: 'Sgt Pepper' and 'Magical Mystery Tour' (where playing simultaneously "as a band" had virtually stopped)
5) late: 'White' through 'Abbey Road' (and somewhere in there exists the Specter hatchet job 'Let It Be')
..... and of course lets not forget all the singles that didn't make it onto an album.... not to mention the songs the gave away.
Being an early Beatles freak I cant say that Pepper is my favorite to listen to but it's up there near the top.
Certainly one of the most important albums in rock history.
What is the WORST Beatle album? As good as it is, I'd have to say 'Beatles for Sale' which was a rush-rush job thrown together in time for the '64 xmas market.

Pepper and Rubber Soul, both the British& American versions, are just about tied for my favorite, with A Hard Day's Night close behind. But I also love With the Beatles. I just got a new IPod and have the LPs arranged chronologically. It's very instructive to hear them back to back, evolving over such a short time.

I can't decide either, it's impossible to choose between the albums for the most part. I recently got Pepper in mono though, and I'm really diggin it.

Oh yes, Pepper. Just... listen.
1967 - the Peak of Humankind.
De-evolution began shortly thereafter.

I always break down the eras of Beatles music by the drugs - the music changed, sometimes drastically, as they discovered each one..in the case of heroin-fueled (at least John) Let it Be, it almost died.

I might be in the minority here, but Pepper's isn't one of my favorite Beatles albums. I think it really hasn't aged well at all - sounds dated to me. There are a few masterpieces to be sure- A Day In The Life might be the peak of their achievements - but all in all I find it to be an uneven album.
My favorite has to be Revolver - Still sounds fresh 42 years later - and much more even. Every song is strong and innovative. I think it's more of a group effort than Pepper, which was more of the McCartney's show. During the making of Pepper John was tripping, George's heart was in India, and Ringo was so bored he learned how to play chess.
So for me, they peaked at Revolver. Don't misunderstand me - I am inspired by everything the Beatles put out, and I don't mean to sound like I'm trashing Pepper. It's a great album - remarkable in places. For me, Revolver is their peak.

Abbey is my favorite, but Pepper and Revolver are tied at a close second.

I, too, think Revolver is their best for the same reasons as stated above. I don't think Pepper sounds as dated as I once did.
Pepper is amazing to listen to, to concentrate on all the parts, especially the rock band behind the Orchestra.
I like to concentrate, say, on the rhythm guitar parts in Good Morning, Good Morning, trying to block out the horns. It would be nice if a "Sgt. Pepper Naked" CD could be released, but impossible with all of the overdubbing.
Revolver, indeed, sounds like a true rock band's effort. A rock band with geniuses, that is.

Listened to Pepper again last night and I find the stereo annoying. I'd love to get the mono mix.

For me it goes like this....
Revolver
Abbey Road
White Album
Hard Day's Night
Pepper's
2nd album
For Sale
Help
Please Please Me
Let It Be
Revolver is the Beatles at their creative peak while still working as a group. Pepper's is good as a whole, but individually some of the songs are weaker than other albums. They're all good though.

I agree with you guys, Revolver is my favorite as well. I could go into so much detail about why it's my favorite, but I'll save that for another time.
