In this very male dominated genre of rock and roll it seems very difficult for a female artist to break into the scene and to be accepted as both original and as Randy Jackson would say "real"

There have been a few very gifted and gritty performers over the years who have stolen the hearts and minds of their audiences with both their recorded and on stage performances.

One of my all time favorites is Sheryl Crow. She remains a fresh, talented artist, who writes, sings and plays guitar with a passion for music that makes her "real"

Her music is both memorable and intricate whilst giving the pretence of being simple and down home. She is a genuine rock star who has demonstrated the ability to cross into country, folk or whatever genre takes her fancy at any given moment in time.

Who is your favorite female rocker and why?

Gracie Slick would be my choice. I loved her voice, especially on White Rabbit & Somebody to Love.

The Kims - Kim Gordon and Kim Deal.
They just rock.
Deborah Harry is far more talented than people give her credit for. I think partly because she makes it look so effortless and partly because she is thought of as just a pretty face.

And even though I don't really like much country/folk stuff, I could listen to Emmylou Harris or Linda Ronstadt for days.

Mmmm... NIna Hagen?

Crissie Hynde definitely belongs in the top five.

Janis Joplin...at singing the blues there were few better. I just love "Piece of My Heart"

Beverly Bivins ...remember "You Were On My Mind"?

Linda Ronstadt...she could sing a grocery list and it would sound wonderful

OK, I'm not a real fan of women in rock/metal in general.

But there are exceptions (not in order of importance):

Paula Abdul (stop laughing, I own her entire collection)
Doro Pesch - Her years in Warlock are unrivaled
Sade - 'nuff said (maybe it's not rock, but I lover her)
Wendy O. Williams - RIP

Lee Aaron. The Metal Queen.
Excellent voice, great, er, stage presence, and a very nice person. She and my sister have been buds for eons. She still writes great rock songs.



Lee was a very underated performer that should have sold more than she did. Unfortunately, I think with better A/R representation in the 80's she would have done even better than she did.

Lee Aaron has a new one coming out soon. Metal Queen wasn't bad at all.

Some interesting choices.

I would never had considered Paula as a rocker. But seriously if you like her Sean, perhaps I had better find some of her stuff and give her a listen.

I really don't want to single any one out because all of the artists identified so far are great, but Lee Aaron? Two thumbs up! What a great rocker.

Please excuse me for being somewhat parochial but on this side of the Atlantic when one talks about British women “rockers” the name of ELKIE BROOKS invariably comes up at some stage. Better known in Europe than the States, during the late 60s early 70s Elkie, together with the late Robert Palmer did some heavy-duty performances fronting a group called Vinegar Joe.

With the break-up of the band and her divorce from Vinegar Joe guitarist, Pete Cage, it took a few years in the wilderness for Elkie to get her act together before release of her first solo album [Rich Man’s Woman 1975]. The Guinness Book of Records credits her as being most charted British female album artist of the last 30 years. The best selling Pearls album stayed in the album charts for an amazing 79 weeks and was still there when her follow-up, Pearls II, charted a year later.

During the interview she makes reference to controlling her consumption of alcohol. Something of a wise precaution because in her younger days she had a fearsome reputation for heavy drinking and a foul temper as a result. She was most defiantly not a happy person to be around when under the influence.
