Yes,
That's Deep Purple after Blackmore left the first time. The lineup is:
Tommy Bolin - guitar
David Coverdale - Vox
Glenn Hughes - Bass
Jon Lord - Organ
Ian Paice - Drums.
This was an unfortunate concert. Tommy Bolin the day before in Jacarta took some bad heroin, and left his left hand almost imobile. He played most of the show with open tunings. Jon Lord played most of the solos, or at least helped out on orgaan. This show was taped for an LP (remember those) as well as for TV in japan. There are much better versions of Deep Purple "Mark IV" as it is refered to. Check out King Biskut Live for a better show.

Well put Rikk. There were some definite concert "lows" with DP Mk IV which their chemical "highs" were directly responsible for. Do check out the King Biscuit or Wings Of A Russian Foxbat live documents as a better example of what this lineup was truly capable of...

The wealth of information that can be tapped into here (and in 4 minutes, from the other side of the globe) never ceases to amaze me.
Thanks guys.

Okay... I've been thinking about this, Rikk:
How is it that you were able to see a 5 minute video and write a fairly lengthy reply in under 4 minutes?
Do you have special powers?

You know, this just muddies the "Made in Europe" tone issue further for me. I know that Glenn wasn't supposed to be using the Ric on the Made in Europe tour, and I'd just about convinced myself that it probably was a P Bass after all, but this, on top of the California Jam concert, just don't seem to back it up. I realise that there are many factors involved and some studio jiggery-pokery (that's a technical term

) may have gone on, but Glenn's P just doesn't sound the same as the bass on Made in Europe to me. It sounds too clunky, too woody, like a typical P Bass. Maybe I just
want it to be a Ric, but it just doesn't sound the same to my ears. Of course that doesn't mean it ain't so.
P.S It's only an issue for me because it's possibly my favourite rock bass sound.

Yeah - let's just pretend it's a Rick! It sure as hell sounds like it though doesn't it? One of my fave bass tones ever too....

Jeff, I know the video clip well. As a Purple fanatic, I have virtually ALL of the video/film ever shot of these guys pre-reunion. As soon as I saw the first frame, I knew what show this was from. I really didn't have to watch it. As for the under 4 minutes. Well, I just happen to hit "view active posts" as you posted.
