1974 4001 Red Dot

As a follow up to my "truss rod straightened" thread, I picked up the bass. It is a March 1974 4001, plexy TRC, red dot position markers, routed for 1/2" Pickguard (but currently sporting a replacement 1" pickguard). My question is no Wavey Grovers. I pulled the tuning peg and it all looks original, no extra holes where a Grover may have been. I pulled a wavey Grover from my 82 4001 and compared, no holes to line up to. Have others seen these without Grovers, with I assume these are Klusons? Here are a bunch of pics. I am going to get a 1/2" white pickguard for it.

Yes Chris, 4001's were made with open backed reverse tuners in '74. I'm not sure exactly when the transition occurred, and its probably likely that either tuner could have been used for a short period of time while the Grover supply was depleted.
And those early open backed tuners did come with the small metal ferrules (like yours) similar to those used in the 60's. I'm not sure how many months it was before the metal ones were used up and RIC began using the plastic ferrules, but it wasn't very long.

Nice maple Chris - a little birdseye, a little flaming. I just love the 70s necks and pickups. Mid '73 and later may have given up the CB, FWMOPs, and Grovers, but they have great necks and tone. Real players, fun to have and hold.

I am going to get a 1/2" pickguard from Pickguardian. The TRC is the clear plexy painted white on the back. Is the stock pickguard similar (Pickguardian's vintage white) or is the standard white stock?

You can have it any way you want from Tony. I had him make both a standard and a back painted PG for the 4003FL I had.

I've searched the site a bit about the "Red Dots", seems the only info I found was a post that said RIC used them when they ran out of the black position markers, and it was around 1974. Which models used the "Red Dots", and what is the date range? If you have a "Red Dot" RIC, please post the model and month/year so we can get a range. I have a 4001 March 1974 (NC).
