Which is the best case for 4001?

For the best protection, the RIC plastic hardshell case is best - the bass fits as snug as possible.
It all depends on what you want ... do you want to stay with a period-correct case or go with a modern one.

I agree, the best protection is the SKB made plastic molded case with the inside fitted for a 4003. Second best would be a 70's -'80 case with the inside fitted for a 4003. The silver-gray vintage style style case is very nice looking but gives the least amount of protection of the RIC cases.

This is just what I did. I recently bought the SKB hard plastic case from an online Ric dealer. SKB gives up their rights to them, so they must be purchased from a dealer or a private party.

That's it in a nutshell there, unless you get one of these...

Must be a Calzone, Anvil or similar flight case. Those offer the best protection, but they are heavy and bulky.

I've got mine in the old blue velvet lined case, but I made some shaped plastic-wrapped foam inserts to hold it securely and keep it from rattling around in there.

Yes, it's a custom Rickenbacker anvil case. Heavy and bulky, like Joey says, but peace of mind. The 64 deluxe is off for a journey in it this week...
