I notice Mike has what looks like a capo before the nut - to hold the strings down in the nut.

Yes, we've seen this one before. That poor old RM 1999 is showing signs of strain already. Interestingly, it appears to be a 67 FG, instead of the usual darker 64.

Andy, that was the first time I'd seen this bass that close up and well-lighted. I've seen a capo or other type "fix" in videos before though. And then there was the video of Squire and the clamp holding the head on his bass.

I love that stuff!

I thought the ‘capo’ was to keep strings from popping off the nut – something about the flat angle of the head ….

Tom, that is why the capo is there. Many had to with the 60s basses shallow headstock angle.
