Wanted to share this one...one of my favorite videos (VHS on TV) still not released on DVD Martin Scorsese's film "Nothin But The Blues" I believe the film was made right around the same time EC's "From The Cradle" and guesss maybe they did not want to release both. Prime stuff soul wired to guitar..nothing in between...

I've never for the life of me ever figured out why he got away from Gibsons - just listen to that tone on "Tore Down"! I've always felt that the Gibby suits his style of playing better than the Strat does. If I'm not mistaken, that's the '64 that became known as the "Crossroads guitar" and the same one used with Blind Faith in addition to the Tele Custom fitted with the Strat neck. Why, Eric, why????

I agree. Eric playing his early trademark Gibsons is why (as a member of Cream) he became a legend in my house. That early so called "woman tone" just did it for me. It was very inspiring.

I do like his work when he uses a Strat as well but he seems to come more alive and in the groove with a Gibbie in his hands.

Some of us don't think it's cool to like any Clapton.

+1 Peewee. I can't understand why he didn't use a Gibson on the Cream Reunion concerts It would have totally changed the preformance for the better.

They discussed that both at the end of the DVD and in interviews. They tried the whole Gibson/Marshall thing, Jack even took out the EB-3 and the marshall stack he had used. I think they used the word "uncomfortable" to describe that particular rehearsal... they didn't feel like themselves... more like 65 year olds who buy Corvettes and Porsches to go pick up 25 year old girls, trying to recapture their youth in a missguided attempt. When finally they ditched the Gibson and picked up their current rigs, the music started falling together because they were being themselves.

That's one thing I enjoyed about the Cream reunion. I saw it like a highschool reunion. It wasn't a bunch of adults running around, hanging out behind the gym, sleeping through biology class, and throwing bits of food at each other in the cafeteria. It was a group of adults, being the person they currently are, reminiscing with old friends.

I understand what you are saying, Nick. But I have always had a `bad feelin' when I here anybody do Cream licks on anything but a Gibson. Go ahead, call me crazy.
On the Reunion DVD, I could have done without Marshall amps and EBO basses but please, pretty please, a Les Paul or SG for Eric. Not to be crasse but would a financial arangement with Fender have anything to do with it ?

Nah, I don't think his agreement forces him to play ony fender, just mostly fender. he has played the 335 in the 90's

I stopped liking Clapton years ago after reading he said he left The Yardbirds(who I love) because they were going "too pop". He was referring to For Your Love.

Exactly.

I've said it many times on many forums . . . as much as I love Fenders I am one of those who firmly believes EC lost his tone the day he dropped the 335 and picked up a Strat.

One can get some blues dirt out of a Tele (GE Smith, Jim Weider, etc.) but never out of a Strat.

There was a dark period from the end of Cream to [imho] the Journeyman album, while Clapton struggled with substance abuse, bad matterial, and a total loss of tone. Over 20 years ! Lazey Strat, low volume twin-reverbs, maybe it was just easier....

It's the player...SRV did pretty will tone wise as does his brother Jimmy...and they're not alone....
