"Newspaper taxis appear on the shore, waiting to take you away. Climb in the back with your head in the clouds and you're gone..." (from Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - Beatles, 1967)

Albert Hoffman, the Sandoz chemist who discovered LSD in 1938 has passed away at the ripe age of 102 (on Wednesday). His discovery sparked an entire culture in the 60's & 70's and lead to research into psychomimetric drugs for the treatment of mental illness. These drugs lead to the near elimination of the practice of lobotomy and greatly reduced the application of electro-shock therapy.

Eh, I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!

LSD was used only experimentally for the treatment of mental illness for a short time decades ago and never caught on although it had great promise at first and if not misused may have become a useful tool, it has been illegal since 1965 because of misuse by young kids, You are perhaps think of the Phenothiazines of which Thorazine was the first and lead to much better management of mental illness and elimination of prefontal lobotomy's although I think those went out before Thorazine was available. Thorazine is still used by the way and was the forerunner of a whole class of drugs still in use. I think Timothy Leary was more grateful for LSD than medicine. Electroshock therapy or ECT is still used fairly routinely today believe it or not for last resort cases of depression
