Jon Camp, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Paul McCartney and I all think it rules even though I never modify or refinish any of my instruments because I intend to use them as my retirement plan.

different strokes for different folks. Their are some people out there who think playing a Bass through a guitar amp is wrong too. Chris Squire is of course not one of them....
If the guy wants to whammy on his ric then let him whammy on his ric.

You mean playing my bass through my guitar amp is OK? Alright! I can't afford a bass amp anyways!

Whatever floats your boat I guess, but come on, at least put one on that is the same color as the rest of the hardware.

There seem to be several schools of thought on this sort of thing (assembling a FranRickenBassenThumper, or any Frankenstein guitar or bass...). The two most prevalent seem to be:
The Aesthetes: They want it to look as if it grew up that way, as a factory product, and to whom appearance is paramount, or at the very least on an equal footing with function. These can be delicious, and at times are deliciously evil to try to coax a tune from, often due to the owner/creator's tendency to "hover" over the hapless lendee.
The Ace Hardware Guys: Nuts, bolts, staples, spray can paint, whatever works. BUT it must come from scrounging or (at best) Ace Hardware's selection. These often sound awesome, occasionally function well only for the creator, and can be found adorning floats in clown parades. But the sound!
