Great guitar song. Supposedly played by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart's Band. Sounds like a 6-string on the main riff, but tonight as I practiced for my band's annual performance (I'm old) I did the 360/12 with the JangleBox. Used fingerpicks. My performance wasn't so hot (fortunately I have two months to practice) but that's definitely the way to approach it. Check it out that way.

Tom - I thought the guitar was done on a 9-string Vox with fingerpicks. Too tough for me to play. Carry on, brother!

Until you posted, I didn't know there was such a thing as a 9-string Vox. My son says that guitar is still being made by Phantom Guitar Works. I'm not the best at identifying sounds, but this still seems to be a 6-string to me. Possibly a Gretsch? I just think it can be easily assigned to a 12-string. However you play it, the jangle needs to be there. There's probably more than one way to tackle that.
