"We have all been getting a little nervous as our mother has said she needs to start restringing us herself. She took Ricky 360 MG to be done yesterday and decided it was time to have a go herself. I drew the short straw....

She set the table up with anti slip mats etc and managed to remember to loosen my old strings before cutting them. Then she took them off and gave me a good polish with some special stuff. Then she started putting the new strings on. I was shaking a little as she did this and she forgot the capo to stop the strings coming out of my tailpiece. She managed to wind the strings the wrong way for my G and D strings that she put on first, but she realised what she had done after I gave her a nudge, so she had to take them off and open a new packet. Good job she had a box of 10 sent by mistake, instead of one packet! She then did a reasonable job I think of winding them on after she remembered the capo and she was quite careful to balance my tail piece. She also remembered to stretch the strings first and I started to relax a little. Then we were done and a last polish and tuning them up.

I think I feel ok. Just need to make sure she has seated the strings properly in my tailpiece and she hasn't wound the strings on quite as neatly as Mickey, but for a first go, not bad I suppose. She means well and tries hard. We will see what happens at rehersal this afternoon. She mentioned taking someone else just in case she had messed up. Phew. I am glad that is over!"


Yea!!! I think I restrung Little Ricky ok. I am really proud, but I will reserve judgement until after rehersal. Maybe I had better take one of the others too! Just in case I did something stupid that I havn't noticed.

I kow you will all think this is no big deal, but FIRST TIME for me.

Congrats Sarah, that wasn't so bad! I'm sure that your 610 really appreciates your efforts. Now you got me curious what my basses are thinking about when I change their strings...

Well, whatever they say, I'll bet they speak in a much deeper voice...

Yeah it got seven pages of responses before it Petered out...

And no matter what fancy English you couch the rationale in, it still makes me turn slowly...

Holy smokes! I missed this thread completely. I think it might have been before I joined the RRF though.

When speaking, I always use "Rickenbacker", or "381", et cetera. When typing I usually use "Rick" just to save keystrokes. Sarah and I talk and email quite a bit, so the "y" has evidently slipped into my keystrokes, but it doesn't bother me, obviously, though I usually avoid it's use because even though I missed the seven page thread, I remembered reading somewhere that some of the forumites didn't like the term.

"Ricky" is the bane of my existence (which, to be fair, is a mostly uneventful one).

That's news to me! Thanks for the 411. I'm glad it's not part of my regular vocabulary, especially when meeting JH in person last year at the confluence. Since joining the forums and learning that the definitive pronunciation for the brand is RickenBACKer, I've gone out of my way to spread the word by prounouncing it so at every possible opportunity. I suppose it shouldn't have been that much of a mystery in the first place, as those who know who WWI ace Eddie Rickenbacker is seems to know to pronounce his name as "RickenBACKer", and RIC literature has mentioned that Mr. A. Rickenbacker and Mr. E. Rickenbacker were distant cousins.

Back on the 610 diary topic, I hope the new strings have broken in and stayed in tune w/o incident Sarah. I wouldn't feel too bad about mixing up a couple of strings. I've recently done the same thing, and I've done countless string changes on all of my guitars...

Didja notice that the more GIF smilies you have on the screen, the slower they cycle?

Or mebbe my RAM is jammed. Damned rammer-jammers! Damn!

Well done, Sarah! I found restringing a 12 for the first time a somewhat daunting experience and I stuffed up the under/over bit in the headstock a couple of times as well. Luckily both my 12s have trapeze tailpieces so it wasn't as bad as it could have been!

Now to fix those pesky sticky stringys in the nutty!

Thank you everyone. Everything worked ok at rehersal. No strings fell off either! And it stayed in tune.

I am not sure who is the saddest. Me for posting this or some of you for complaining at my use of the word "Ricky".I don't give a stuff what term anyone uses ......so ban me from the forum.........

I think I might give up posting here altogether and join a knitting forum.

That brings back happy memories..........well not so happy memories, the first time I re-strung my 360/12 was a nightmare. It gets easier Sarah!
