Binaural Recording

At rehearsal the string band I play in talked about going into the studio. And I mentioned that I'd always wanted to experiment with binaural recording. I briefly explained it to them. Rather than going into a detailed dissertation now, you can read all about it if you >>>poke here<<<.

The question for discussion is: Have any of you ever had experience with binaural recording? Were you satisfied with the results? Tell me the whole story.

I did a bit of that while at USC in charge of sound for the Drama Dept. in the late '80s. It works just fine but keep in mind this is best listened to on headphones, not speakers, unless they are right next to your ears on either side of your head for best results.

You're right about the head phones bit. I had read that several different places. What makes binaural an attractive idea is the propensity of younger folks to down load one track here and another there onto their ipods, and then listen to their music through head phones. At first blush, it seems like a great format for just that sort of thing.
