Laredo ACG Preamp installed (finally)

Well, it's pretty much done. I've been juggling a kitchen renovation (I'm the contractor  ) and getting the GN ready for racing/pimping season so this project was on the back-burner. Having RIO coming up I thought I'd get it done in case anyone wants to check out something different. I had the bass completely torn down because I had a minor "mishap" during installation that required some "tweaks" to the finish. So, basically, it still needs a setup and adjusting the internal pots but so far I'm very impressed.....it meets my goals of being "Wal-like" in function/results. It still sounds like a Laredo but offers some nice tone shaping and adds some different character. It can make drastic changes but also just subtle nuances are possible. I'll put it through it's paces more after final securing of the wires and putting on the new control cover (thanks Pickguardian). I realize the electronics and paint aren't going to suit most of ya'll's aesthetic and tonal sensibilities but......what the heck!

Here are a few pics showing the control layout and, mostly, attempting to show the green ghost flames. I asked my buddy to make 'em subtle and he did so i had to shine a flashlight to get 'em to show up on my camera.....hence the cruddy pics (the smudges don't help either).

Kool paint, Brian. I also really like the control layout. That arrangement worked out really well. Hope to see/hear it this weekend!

I have recently really taken to East preamps. I put a j-retro in my jazz bass and now that jazz outplays my other 13 basses. http://www.3dentourage.com/425/Black-an ... -jazz5.htm

I think the 4004 bass really needs a 5th string and a preamp. I am going to put a u-retro in my 4004, and in my 2020, and 2030. The beauty of the East u-retro is it has 3 knobs. So it would still look like my vvt wiring.

Nice Job Brian ... I think the 4004 is a great platform for that kind of mod.

I like the flames. Nice job!

The 4004 is a wide-open canvas for that kind of thing. I've thought about custom paint jobs on the 4001/3 basses, but the big pick guard always seems to be a problem.

Cool... I'd love to hear a sample of the variety of sounds it makes with that pre-amp... I've got one in my ACG Recurve and I'm constantly surprised by the variety and range of sounds/tones that I can get.

Nothing like a black Sharpie and clear nail polish? Nice looking conversion. Truly a FireGlo.

love it,brian! the green flames are very subtle, which i think is a good thing on the classic body style, very very nice. although i am not a fan of active electronix, your install looks like it was part of the original design....

The cheap 2 band active preamps sound cheap. I have played countless 2 band active basses like schecter, Ibanez, warwick, and many others ... they sound bland and sterile. But the East preamps sound more organic and with the sweepable mids and the pedal board that I am using now I can get pretty much any sound I want.

I like the layout but I hate the flames. Sorry, you just ruined the look of that bass now.
