How do you guys get such decent avitar pics ...if I attempt to edit a picture down (size,pixels etc) using microsoft photoshop it seems I cant get below about 30kb size without the picture deteriorating into a mass of square colored blocks.

Try using "save for web & devices" under the file menu. Save it as a med .jpg and if thats still too large then try .gif. Oh and photoshop is an Adobe program
