Does anyone know where to find a toaster pickup for a 4001? Rickenbacker does not stock them anymore and the only place I have seen them at all is on ebay.

Here's what it said:

"00031 - Vintage neck chrome (machine screw/plate mount) 7.4K scatterwound vintage toaster - $150 - (out of stock)"

Get the guitar toaster (00030), it's the same pickup, only the height adjustment screw holes are slightly bigger, use a nut with the machine screw.

I believe that the 4001 neck cavity will only take a short pole toaster, but, if you are using it as a bridge pickup, it should be fine. I'm sure, someone will chime in with more specifics, as I don't know for sure what, if any, years they made them like that, or when, if they did, change. The 7.4k toasters they now sell are all long pole, and still make the short pole and horseshoe, and the higher gain ones I think, but do not offer them as aftermarket items. I would love to see them offered, and would hope they would be as they catch up on their backlog, but I think we would see a carbon fiber 381 with a floyd rose on it before that happens. Oh well, one can dream....

I'm pretty sure this is true of '60s 4000 series basses (even the 4000 came with a shallow neck rout in the '60s) but not of most '70s 4001s - although I'm not sure of the exact transition to a deeper cavity (and away from the "low profile" toaster). The '72 carcass I'm restoring has a reasonably deep original neck cavity - it can easily cope with a hi-gain or modern toaster. There are so many spec changes from '67 to '75 that it's hard to keep track of what was what.

Yes, but "ricaddic" stated that he purchased the last one available at the-music-connection.com. The Rickenbacker Corporation does not have any available either, so I am back to looking on eBay and Craig's list. The Tampa Craig's list one that is available is $250 and I would rather not have to pay that much.

Anyone else have another source?

I have decided to keep my 4001 as original as possible with real Rickenbacker parts, so a Duncan, Rose, Khaler or other 3rd party pickups are out of the question.
