Cheap Trick

Saw them Saturday at the Hollywood Bowl. It was to celebrate the 41st anniversary of Sgt. Peppers (saw this show last year, too, on the 40th).

Cheap Trick was excellent, of course, very loose and spontanious. Robin Zander was awesome. Heck, they were all awesome, but he's got to be singled out on this night.

The first set was Beatle songs, as picked by the guest singers, the conductor, and CT .

Billy Corgan sang Julia. Ian Ball (of the band Gomez - there's nothing like a Liverpudlian singing a Beatles' tune!), Rob Laufer (an early Beatlemania "George" and quite fantastic) and Nina Simone's daughter, Simone, all performed with/in addition to CT.

The second set was the entire Sgt. Pepper's album, in sequence, complete with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and an Indian Orchestra. These songs kick serious behind played live and loud. The guests also contributed here.

Two Ricks - Rick played a new looking 360FG (w/higains and the sticker still on the pg) for the encore, All You Need Is Love, botched the solo, threw up his hands and made a goofy face.

Zander played a really old one (eh...sorry, this is the Rick Forum; metal TRC, cresting wave, would that be a '50's 450? Man, I'm bad at my vinatge game), for the Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End three way guitar solo, taking the John solos. Rick took the Paul solos, and their supplemental guitarist took George's. They also utilized a keyboardist. I'm assuming these two tour with them now?

Geoff Emerick was doing the sound, he took a bow. Donovan was walking around! A regular love-in.

It was a lot of fun, lots of oldsters and young-uns mixed in the crowd, my daughter sang at the top of her lungs.
Beautiful night, great music, even the scent of herbs in the air. A splendid time was...

P.S. Finally saw "Love" in Las Vegas earlier this month, pretty darn good.

That's the Rick Robin has had FOREVER. Rumour has it that it once belonged to one of the Ramones but I've seen him with it as early as 1977-78.
I heard the first Pepper show last year and it was great. These guys are awesome, not many bands would do something like this. I've seen them....gulp....53 times and they always rock.

Jerry....Thanks for the review...Wow, I'm jealous. I've always loved Cheap Trick too, but have not seen this particular show. Now I'm off to search the web to see when they are anywhere near me.

Images from CT's myspace.

"BEATLES" was spelled out in flowers at the bottom of the stage, mimicking the Sgt Pepper's cover..

I would have loved to have seen that performance, Jerry. I've seen Cheap Trick once in 1979 on their Dream Police tour of Australia. Unfortunately I've missed seeing them by a day or two, or by 100 miles, every time I've been to the States. They're due to tour Australia later this year, supporting Def Leppard (yawn).

You're spot on regarding Robin's 450 MG. It's got to be a '59 or early '60 model.
