The Kinks

Bought the Kinks "Ultimate Collection" today, and found this pic of Peter Quaife using a RM 1999. The FG looks beautiful! A little disapointed about Dave Davies using the Vox 12-string. I think the 1993/12 or the 360/12 would have suited him better, personally.

Also found this interesting story of why Quaife quit using the RM1999, posted on the main site from our very own Peter McCormack. Thank you Peter for posting a great story :)

He needs to let that bass hang a little lower, doesn't look too comfortable.

You think he's uncomfortable in the pic, check out this vid from the NME Poll show, '65:

Thanks for that video! That was really great. Too bad we in America were deprived of the privilege of seeing them live in that early period.

I like to keep the headstock of my guitar below my actual head. Kind of defeats the purpose of that carved-for-comfort upper bout.

It's still not as bad as Bill Wyman.

It's practically a medallion necklace! a lot of retro rockaibilly/hillbilly/country swing guys do the same thing. It drives me nuts. They also buy their Levis 501s super long on purpose and make cuffs that go halfway up the calf, which was okay back in the day when one lived in the middle of nowhere and had to buy jeans from the local country sotre and they only came in one or two lengths, but c'mon, those days are over!

He used short-scale basses with the Stones, such as the Fender Mustang and the Gibson EB-0. I guess they suited him better with that (uncomfortable) upright look.

Was "Sunny Afternoon" recorded with the 1999? Quaife's great, growly, grinding bassline sounds like the Horseshoe to me... (then again, I've never played a Ric bass with a horseshoe, let alone even seen a Ric bass in person at all!)

I don't think that it was the Ric. In later '65 and '66 he was seen more with a Fender or Gibson. To my ears, it's one of those two and not the Ric. I could be wrong, but to my ears, that's what it is. In this promo clip, it's a Gibson.

Matthew, thanks for that u-tube; that made my day. He should've stuck with the 4001, though, IMHO  Those 60's Gibsons were pretty awful basses by and large, despite their cool looks.

Not a problem. Granted that's only a promo clip, and those aren't exactly authoritative for the actual instruments used in the studio. I agree that some of the '60's era Gibsons sound bad. Not too many people did much good with them save for maybe Chas Chandler and Jack Bruce.

Our bass player (Lawrie Roberts) in the 60's changed from a Hofner President bass to a Gibson EB3 wired for stereo output. The difference was magical. It sounded very much like a Rickenbacker. I believe that much of what comes out of an amp is up to the player. Our bass player was world class and he played his customised EB3 in much the same manner as The Ox. In short, he was an amazing bass player and his sound was fabulous.

Bill Wyman used the Gibson EB-0 during "Goats Head Soup" and that tour. How ****** does it sound on tracks like "Silver Train" and "Star Star"?

There's a huge difference between an EB0 and an EB3 wired for stereo for starters and Bill Wyman is not exactly in the same class as Jack Bruce or The OX.

OK so I tend to generalize. There were some great pieces that came of of that era, of course. I guess I was thinking of the poor EB0 especially. The EB3 was a more viable beast. 'Course if you're Jack Bruce you didn't just pull it out of the store and play it...
