I love and hate it in equal measures.
I love that you can sometimes find things that you may (or may not!) want to buy, quickly and usually at a reasonable price.
I hate it when they send you 'teasers' of things they think you may want to buy based on your buying history.

I sometimes get the odd CD off Amazon, and just because I may have bought a Northern Soul Best of CD, I'm then bombarded with emails from them detailing every Northern Soul CD known to man, or as they put it...."Other things I might like".

Grrr!!!

I hate the fact that somewhere in the stratosphere I've been put in a box as a this or that type of person.

In my anger I sent them an email pointing out that I actually listen to everything from Bela Bartok symphonies to Husker Du's guitar wall of noise.

I then got an email back from Amazon detailing all the Husker Du albums as "Other things I might like!"

Grrrrr!!!!

It's pretty easy to ignore those emails.

You can also update your account preferences so you won't even get them. Go to Amazon's website, click on the "Your Account" link, click "Update Your Communication Preferences" under the Account Settings section, and uncheck the boxes under Email Notifications.

No more aggravation.

Rob, as I read that first line, I saw the second one coming even before I read it!

I've found some pretty cool old Mod/Punk stuff and reissues, as well as books and movies(yes Scotty, I can read) on Amazon, as well as a few other things. I don't know about the UK, but in the US if you spend 25 dollars or more on stuff they have, the shipping is free. Takes about 2 weeks to get it, but I'm not in that big a hurry.

Also, I rarely get emails from them, but when I go to the site I usually get a bunch of "stuff we think you would like" on the opening page.

I'm a big fan of Amazon. Sure a lot of the emails can get annoying, but I've been sent some things that were really good. I'm also in on the Gold membership or whatever it's called. If you order enough from them in the course of a year, it becomes worth it as you get 2 day shipping for a year with the membership.

I'm out of love with Amazon at the moment. I pre-ordered the ltd edition of Weller's latest for £12 something, a good three weeks before release, only to be told 3 days after the release that it was now unavailable - "although you can still buy it from this seller at £32.49". Grrr. I got it the next day in my local Fopp. Loving Fopp and handing over much money at the moment - it's a good job that they haven't got the online shop back up and running yet. If you've got one near you in the UK go in - Blue Note albums for a fiver etc. The more you spend, the more you save

I've never had a bad experience with Amazon. My "Who's Next: Deluxe Edition" by the Who CD came with a damaged slipcase, but it didn't matter to me. I bought the CD to listen to it, not to keep it in mint condition forever!

I actually turn to it when I want to buy a CD I can't find anywhere in stores. I bought "The Essential Byrds" from there, as I looked at Best Buy, the local Barnes & Noble and FYE, and couldn't find it. It arrived with no problems whatsoever. I also use it to find out-of-print videos such as Tom Petty's '91 tour VHS and the Who's "The Kids Are Alright: Special 2-disc Edition". My grandma even used the UK branch of it to order me my personal favorite Christmas 2006 gift. A DVD box set of complete seasons 1-5 of Thomas the Tank Engine, my favorite show growing up. It was the show the way it was meant to be: the original British format. The other UK DVD retailers we looked at couldn't (or wouldn't I should say) ship to the US

Barnes and Noble is similar to Amazon, in some ways. I know that they've been a big help to me when I was looking for two Tom Petty albums, couldn't find either, and they ordered them both for me and shipped them directly to my house.

All in all, B&N and Amazon help us, although they're emails are annoying, but you can expect that with any online store.

I used to love Fopp when I worked in London!

I would spend all my lunch time (and wages) in there. They do some great deals. I've even sometimes bought things cheaply and sold them straight away on Ebay for a bit of a profit.

BTW. The Amazon thing was really meant as a bit of a joke, I use them all the time.

One of my best results was a Who cd box set that I bought for a fiver and sold for just under £50!
