Having just finished an exceptional ear of corn and basking in the afterglow, I began wondering if our esteemed friends in Europe and Oz can acquire and enjoy this basic epicurain delight? An ear of corn on the barbie next to the shrimp?

One of the few good things about living in Iowa is the fresh sweet corn!

Cant beat corn on the cob on the barbie. Basted in butter, a sprinkle of salt and rotated regularly until a golden hue is achieved.

If you go to the right supermarket there, you'll see that they sometimes categorize and bin different kinds of Sweet Corn the way most stores differentiate between different kinds of apples....The last time I was there to visit my brother, I saw one bin devoted to corn from a particularly famous Farm....amazing(ly) good!

During my first couple of months living in Brasil, I really enjoyed all the unique foody things that people introduced me to. About my third month there, though, I got a bad hankering for a hot dog, on a bun, Chicago style if possible (fresh tomato wedges, diced onions, yellow mustard, and CELERY SALT).

In a city of a million plus people, this was an impossibility. Hot dogs were located eventually, but no buns-- I had to settle for a mini-baguette, baked fresh. Yellow mustard OK, fresh tomatoes tasted quite differently from USA ones, same for the onions. NO CELERY SALT, ANYWHERE.

So, I narfed down three with some of that odd S. American super-sweet Coke. (Be sure to wash the cans with a weak bleach solution--rat droppings in the Coke warehouse...) It was a, er...unique take on Chicago cuisine.

While at the store, I bought a half-dozen ears of the most gorgeous-to-look-at yellow corn I'd ever laid eyes on, and popped those on the grille, too...yummy.

Bit into my first ear of Brasilian corn, and...no flavor. Zip. Nada.

Nobody could understand what the fuss was all about, but I was inconsolable.

Fresh coconut water--iced cold--nearly made up for it. And--have you ever had an avocado smoothie made with milk and sugar? Incredible!

When in Brasil, you cannot recreate Chicago comfort food, though.

Avocado smoothie, heh? Love avacados, but how does one go about whipping up a batch of avacado smoothies? Seriously.
