Fender are launching a David Gilmour signature model Stratocaster guitar.

The guitar, called the 'Black Strat', will be available from September 22 and is based on the star's iconic instrument that helped create his band Pink Floyd's revolutionary sound.

Gilmour said.......
"I told Fender that it was just an ordinary Strat that I bought, but I must say they’ve done a great job of recreating it."

WTF?

Thank goodness that Fender are able to copy an ordinary strat, eh?

Yeah ordinary in the original sense, but David has don't so many modifications to it I understand what he means.

I'm really not bothered or interested in the guitar itself (It's a strat FFS!) I just think that if you take the quote on face value it's hilarious....

"I just bought an ordinary strat and Fender have done a great job in re creating it"

Must just be my warped sense of humour.

I'll get my coat...........

Naaawwhhh, leave your coat just where it is, M-Bob. Sit down and stay a while. I hear what you're saying about how the quote was well, sort of like a Seinfeld episode --- much ado 'bout nothin'. Peace, out.....G-foot.

Yeah, "just an ordinary strat" that will probably sell for $20K a pop.

No, I looked it up. They have a clean and relic model. So it'll probably be much cheaper than 20k. They even said it won't be like blackie. It'll start being a standard guitar. No short term stuff. If I could play and had money I'd get one. Gilmour's my favorite guitar player.

Perhaps they'll scratch out some buckle wear and charge an extra thousand buck.

There's a sucker born every day.

Now (thinking ahead) who else is famous and plays an ordinary Fender?

Lots of profit potential here, I'm thinking.

Maybe someday a Strat, going Gibson's Robot Geetar one better, that's factory-equipped with Auto-Ability®, hey?

Is that one of the things you're working on then Paul? :)

Actually, talking of signature models, what is the process in creating a signature model of a famous artist?

Would Ric just go to someone like Susanna Hoffs and say, here's a blank canvas, design your ideal Ric?
Or would Ric say to her, we've designed a signature model based on the Ric you play, if you like it, please sign it?

I don't know about SH and her signature Rick, but it seems from comments that Roger McGuinn made, that he had an idea or two concerning his signature model. And I know that a rep. from the Gretsch Co. approached Chet Atkins looking for an endorsement. Chet tells how he really didn't like Gretsch guitars at that point; he was playing a hand-made D'Angelico at the time. So finally Chet and the Gretsch folks designed a guitar together. Maybe it all depends on the guitarist.

I said they were doing that. Dave's guitar has that beat though. Filled hole from a Kahler bridge.

Here's a shot of the additional switch with the filled in hole.

Here's your buckle wear.

Anyway, if anyone deserves a signature guitar (over people that get one for the hell of it because that's what they're playing at the time) it's David.

If any signature Fender's should be made fun of it's John Mayer's (ooooh, a racing stripe!) and Geddy Lee's. Hell, Ged got his bass in a pawn shop. That's pretty stock. He replaced the bridge. That's it. The neck's aren't all that different eiter. They still make basses with black blocks anyway.

Do you guys have to make fun of everything Fender does now?
