I am looking at a guitar safewell gun safe used for guitars, that weighs around 520 pounds. I live in an older 1925 house with wood floors and don't want to put this thing in the basementby accident!Any thoughts on guitar safes. the safe is a Stack On, Thanks

What about installing an alarm system instead? For about the same price that includes monitoring you can protect everything else too.

Hey thanks guys, The alarm is a good idea, assuming you don't have a fire that takes out your guitars before the FD arrives. I may move to Detroit and the police there don't even respond to alarms. You have to go to the station the next day and make a report. It's a joke. I checked out the link to the safes, thanks. Funny thing is the Rics I want to protect are mostly of sentimental value as one was was already in a fire, one was butchered and the 12 is the monetarily valuable one. Think maybe both a safe and a very loud alarm would do the trick.

Figure the area of the foot print of the safe, say 12-15 sq.ft, then ask yourself if the same weight in average adults, say 3-4 in number, could stand together with all your guitars within the same footprint indefinitely without crashing through ... think about spreading the load over more floor beams, put long cross-beams on the floor under the safe. not pretty but it would help. An inch thick plywood mat under the feet will diffuse the point loading if that's an issue. You could design an attractive low riser with those features if you're handy.

In addition to this if you put it at an outside wall. It would be at the point that the floor joists are anchored. The floor should be stronger there.

Thank you lady and gentlemen. I have scoped out the basement and luckily an old coal closet with 2 block walls as well as a support post beneath the main joist to chose from. the alarm is a great idea as well. No I just need to decide on what safe and how much to spend. i have looked at the Stack On Elite at the sporting goods big box store and wonder if they are any good.

You could install a Halon system in case of fire!
