I just laid down a few tracks of something that's been going around in my head for about a month. Bass, drums, organ. It's the first time I've recorded with my 4001. Thought it might be interesting to update as I go and let folks in on the process. Tomorrow I do some guitar tracks.
All comments are welcome; be honest, I can take it :D

Kira: I like the feel of this song. On first listen it reminds me of Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite. Perhaps this one will make it to RRF CD2.

Rats.... the new Quicktime plugin is incompatible with my Firefox browser.... So I guess I'll have to wait until RRF CD2, Kira!

Mel, is the song coming in but you just can't play it? You can save the mp3 to desktop with the button on the far right of the bar and play it in another app. :D

And thanks, Peter, I'm working as fast as my little hands will go :D

It seems my browser won't let me get that far--I get to the first screen and I get a bar across the top that says Firefox has blocked the add-on, and when I click for more information, it says that the new quicktime plugin should no longer be used with Firefox.... it's weird, and I'm generally clueless about technological stuff anyway....

However, I look forward to hearing your song in progress!

Hey, Mel, try this link to a free hosting site where I upped the file:

hope that works.

Cool! It worked! Thanks, Kira!

Sounds like you're off to a great start--it'll sound great with some jangly guitars.... I caught myself humming a melody line to your progression. Very cool!

Thanks, Mel :D I'm almost ready to start putting together the vocals. I'll send away the significant others for their own good before I start the screaming process.
You know I'm doing this on my boat. My "studio" is the converted wheelhouse, about 7' square.

Kira,

Really a nice piece of work. I love the darkness of the melody. (could I borrow this for Halloween speakers? :) )

I'm always interested in what folks use in making their recordings. Would it be possible to let us know the equipment/software you used? I'm particularly interested in the drum track and how you put that together.

Thanks for the listen..

Chap

Thanks, Chap, I'm glad you took the trouble to listen. I guess it is kind of dark, especially the middle eight (or nine), and the lyrics are going in that direction too. Well dark hopeful, like most of my stuff.
You'll laugh when I tell you what I'm doing: This song began with the middle descending/ascending bit on my 4001. I've had the bass for a month and it's like this song came along no extra charge because I started playing the song almost immediately as I was getting acquainted with her. I built the opening chords/chorus a little brighter to wake up from the dark part. Then the verse fell in yesterday from a line I toyed with a few months ago. The line goes to the 4 and returns, bingo
I fired up GarageBand and grabbed my bass, connected it directly to the computer and ran through a few takes with the click track, and then I polished it up with a little cut & paste; there are several ways to enhance timing, pitch etc. I laid on the drums one piece at a time from software instruments triggered by a midi keyboard, first bass, then snare and then ride. So there are no loops in this song, just me banging away at the keyboard (OK there's some cut and paste magic going on too). Switched to rock organ sounds and laid on left and right hand parts separately, then a third ascending cathedral organ line.
I do this one straw at a time because I'm not a drummer or a keyboard player.
Last night I made the first mix and then I put in the rhythm guitar (my 320) this morning. I took a line out of my Behringer AC112 hybrid modeling amp (all settings on ten with a combo simulator effect) direct into the back of the computer and dialed up a nice crisp treble-mid pups blend. Just been fiddling with the mix and writing vocal parts since then. So you see, this is about as rough as it gets. It's all GarageBand, Behringer and Rickenbacker. Are you rolling on the floor?
I cut my teeth in the studio in the seventies as a player, so you can imagine what a ball I'm having in comparison with two-inch tape and razor blade. :P

Hey Kira, want to come to Cleveland and teach me all that recording stuff with GB? :D

Oh, come on Jeff, you must know more than me about this stuff! A visit to Cleveland would be nice, though, as long as there are no hurricanes. :D

Never had a hurricane around these here parts! :D

Computer recording is totally new to me, I finally bought a USB cable yesterday to plug my instruments into the Mac, and I am fudging my way through very basic stuff in GB.
