I suppose that this is as good of a place as any for this question: What is everyone's opinion on ripping alternative versions/takes, live versions, BBC versions, demos, outtakes and other material for your iPod/MP3 player? Digital space can be a precious commodity for some, and while it's nice to have all of the different versions of a particular song available, it's often not too practical. Do you stick with the original recording and maybe supplement on only the best?

I stick with the version i like the most, no matter if it's the original studio recording, live version, re-recording or cover. And i don't have an iPod.

I have about 150 different Beatle albums, some dedicated to a single song. I love it all. Loading up the 'pod is a matter of whim for me, could literally be anything in the world. homemade white noise or bach included But there's always room for 23 versions of Helter Skelter.
I use a little 1G shuffle for short outings and a 80G video for extended viewing/listening (great in bed). I change content frequently on the little one while the big one backs up some of my media library I have a lot of stuff.

I like to keep it simple. Whilst I can certainly appreciate out takes, they are not always for various reasons the cuts that I would choose to listen to. Many Beatle songs for example illicit a certain memory for me and I have pretty much ingrained the arrangement and the mix as I knew it back then, in my memory's store.

I find out takes to be fascinating for a variety of reasons. Not the least of which is they are often like looking at a historical perspective of how the song or music was pieced together and then finally issued to the public as a record or a cut on a CD.

I don't have an Ipod but my mp3 player only has original releases on it. I trust that my comments are somewhat helpful?

Like Brian I prefer the originals - especially the 60s and 70s stuff - because they all hold special places in my musical memory. For later goodies if a live or cover version appeals to me more than the studio original I'll go for that.

I just bought my first mp3 player on Saturday.... an 8gb iPod. Yes, I've come into the 21st century!! Neat little thing but it's going to take me many late nights to get my playlist set up!!

I bought it because I've just put a deposit on a new car and it will have an mp3 input in the dash..... alas, no CD stacker! Having an mp3 player will be so much better than mucking around pulling CDs out the cover for one song!

Scotty the simple answer is no.................the more complicated answer is walking sticks are mandatory in the heather. May you always breathe that sweet smell and I hope they feed you porridge and haggis in the retirement home.

I know you guys really do like me i can tell. As for porridge and haggis i hope they dont serve me that but i do like a black pudding now and again! ( i dont know how that comes across) Do you guys get black puddings in the US ?
