all that glitters is not....

i am thinking of buying a new pickguard for my mapleglo v63,and would like the sort of brownish gold i see on the late 50's 4000's.....pickguardian offers 3 different "vintage 50-60's" gold colors to choose-but no pix to compare, only a one inch square. there is a brownish gold,a copperish gold and a rather bright gold to choose from,so i am not sure which of the 3 would look best...although i think the brownish gold may be the one. of course this is a "custom" option because of sizing/hole variations in the original product,so i want to get it right before i order..has anyone ordered this for their instruments, have pix and /or....opinions? one other thing,my pickguard on the bass has about a 1/4 inch space from the horseshoe, and also goes all the way to the lower edge of the bass. if i didn't have to mess the bass up with different screw placement,i would like the pickguard to touch the horseshoe and have a bit of wood "halo" along the lower edge. is this realistic?

Hey Woody!
Another gold plastic freak just like me!
I'd say get your gold TRC first. Then Tony can do his best to match it. Send in your original pick guard for him to make an exact replacement with matching screw holes. At that time you can also fine tune it a little and tell him to make it 1/8" closer to the bridge pickup if you want.

jeff-thanks! as far as "get your gold trc first",i don't know if that's gonna happen-i love the look and would gladly swap my vintage oversized plexi trc for it,but i understand that is no longer an option at the rickwerks, and i am just more than a little queasy about spending (several) hundred for a 4 inch peice of plastic...but would gladly pay the $75 or so for the pickguard. eh...so have you fullfulled your gold plastic desires and/or have any pix thereof? anyone want to sell or swap a vintage gold trc?

Woody, now you have me thinking about putting a gold pickguard on my V63!!
Though I wouldn't do it unless I could find a gold TRC to match the pickguard.

IMHO the TRC and guards don't have to match that well since there is some distance. An upper/lower guard is another story.

Isn't Pickguardian able to match the color of their pickguard to a TRC if it's sent to them?

Yeah, its a tough call to make paying around $200 for a TRC. I justified it by telling myself that I could re-sell it for a similar price. You'd have to wait for one to show up on Ebay though as RIC ain't letting any out the door these days.
I'll post a pic of my V63JG w/gold plastic flanked by two stock V63JG's for your amusement. (String blockers removed from mine of course!)
IMHO (agreeing with Jason) you don't need the TRC and pick guard to match perfectly, but you do need both to be gold. Mine don't match perfectly, but most of the difference you see in the photo below is from the different angles. As you know, the headstock tilts back on the V63, so its on a different plane from the pick guard.
Not sure if you were thinking of this, but ...I think a white TRC with a gold pick guard wouldn't look right.

So would I. And then I'd swap the plastic and remove the shoes!
