... coz there's only the merest hint of my 360/12 during the playout under the mellotrons, but since this is my first upload, I thought I'd mention it, test the water and see if it's worth posting any more!

Uh- I think I got the link wrong... I'm really good at this posting on forums malarkey.

Maybe this is better:

Good song, Mark! Your voice reminds me of Peter Gabriel a little (I like). How can I call the style: Doom Prog? I like its darkness and density and the ironic lyrics. I have no idea how you did it, though; I'm such a rash beginner in the digital studio. Can you break down your process for us a little, and mention some of your gear?
My only suggestion is more ricks :D The one that's on there comes through distinctly. I love my 320 when it comes time to cut through the mix, its higher voice really stands out. But anyway... cool, man!

Hey thanks for the kind words, Kira. 'Doom Prog' lol!
Well I haven't had my Rick (my first after coveting one for 23 years!) for very long and this was the first outing. I am sure it will become more obvious once I get my fat fingers to cope with it :D
Since you ask, here's the tech stuff:
Recording-wise I use a PC with a Presonus Inspire firewire audio interface and Cubase SX. The drums are programmed on NI Battery and the Mellotrons are from Gmedia MTron (which is absolutely indispensible!).
Guitars are: F____r Strat (paisley, of course!), a Franken-Tele thinline and of course my lovely new 360/12JG, the bass is an old Hohner Arbour series PJ-style. All guitars were recorded dry, straight into cubase, and processed using NI GuitarRig2, the bass went into the wonderful IK Multimedia SVX Ampeg sim. Vocals recorded via an ancient Shure Unidyne B mic.
The trouble with digital recording is the amount of flexibility... you can (and I often do) spend far too long tweaking. My main time-vacuum is the drums- I can spend whole evenings just shifting them around and adjusting midi-velocity in order to make them sound 'real' and next day listen back and think 'eurgh!'...
Phew- hope thats not too much trainspotting... bet you're sorry you asked!

Very Psychedelic! Dig it, Mark. Which guitar had the tremolo effect?

I know what you mean about the trap of too many options. I just use an old Alesis HR-16 drum machine, and I still get caught up in tweaking the sounds on that thing.

Thanks Mark. The tremolo guitar is my bitsa Tele thinline (copy). I used to love my HR16, but it died long ago...

... speaking of long ago, here's a song from long ago that we used to do in a band I was in round about 1992. It was originally recorded using my HR16 and my Fender Electric XII, but only coz I didn't have a Ricky. So I've re-recorded the song with better drums and my 360/12. I fear the vocals need re-tweaking however.

Guitars: 360/12, 1983 Tokai Strat-a-like, Hohner bass (new strings, too light- eugh!)
Drums: BFD

Hey - another great tune! 'Cast A Pale Shadow.' You're doing yourself a disservice by not posting it under it's own name. Great sounding Rick, too. And I love the psycho-solo in the middle & end. Great effects on the guitar. Your vocal delivery reminds me of early Bowie and Robin Hitchcock in some places. I highly recommend that you submit some songs for the new RRF CD.

Hey! thanks again Mark.

I'm really flattered that you suggest I submit my stuff for the CD. Never really given it any consideration before, especially when I listen to stuff the rest of you guys do.
Robyn Hitchcock and early Bowie- cool! It must be a result of singing 'Laughing Gnome' and 'Starman' with my son so much when he was younger!
You are too kind about the Rickenbacker part, I feel, as it is heavily compressed and really shows the mistakes where I haven't quite got to grips with the slenderness of the neck (read 'fat finger syndrome'!). Nevertheless my ego feels comfortably massaged! Thankyou :D
