I have a modded Squire jazz bass (Kubicki maple neck),, I want to drop some different pickups in to go for the "Geddy" tone. Any recommendations??

hi scott,i have a jazz bass copy with seymour duncan hot pickups, and i really like the tone i get with them, through my markbass 1-12" combo. i run it straight in,i do have a pedal that simulates a tube drive sorta like geddy's sansamp, and find i can get a similar sound...(i don't play anything like geddy,however...) :|

They just seem a bit weak. Kindof "ratty" in the high end when I pop on the D and G string. They just sound kind of generic. The tone is there, but lacks definition. I feel it could be better.

Does anyone know how the the "Squier" bodies/pickups differ from the "Geddy Lee Jazz bass"? Maybe the PUPs are OK,,and its the body wood causing the problem.???

The Kubicki neck I have is great though. Tough to beat.

I am pretty sure the GL pickups are Vintage American ones.

I know the Lindy Fralin and DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups are excellent J pickups, though don't know if they will help you with the Geddy tone.

I replaced the pups in my MIJ '62 RI J-bass with a set of (used) Fender Custom Shop '62 pups, and the difference is amazing. The stock (US-made) pups were thin and reedy in comparison. There's a whole world of bottom end to the bass that had been missing, but still that clarity and zing I was looking for in a J-bass.
