I am decidedly not a fan of tuners that rely on built in microphones. Despite what the ad copy says, they always seem to pick up too much ambient room noise to be effective. And that goes double if you're on stage in a noisy club.

nope. i am just fishing for information without that marketing slime all over.
so far i know:
peterson strobostomp - NO! not again.
planet waves - no, not good enough.
korg new black semi strobe - no, very unpleasant.
turbo-tuner stomp ? maybe.
precision strobe pst4 - great but $500
i need something that is pedal, reliable and functions for setups as well.

Maybe this has been decided?
If not, I have a lot of faith in and would recommend a Boss TU-2.
I've been using one for years; haven't had or heard of any problems with them. I'm sure there are more accurate devices for more money, but it works for me. Both the guitarists and I each have a TU-2, so at least we're all tuned together, even if it's wrong! (It's not wrong).
It's solidly made and reliable, which is important to me. I use it between the bass and the amp.
My favorite things about it: easy to read in the dark or light, totally quiet tuning, no need for a "tuner-out" or a mute on the amp, and during breaks I just click it ON to mute the amp.

Yes, well, I use it for my own setups, gigs, in the studio, I use it everywhere I need a tuner.
I don't know what the standard for accuracy is, and as I said - for more money you may get more accuracy, but this will get close enough...I'm not a salesman for Boss, so I don't know all the details. I do know that lots of guitarists and bassists use them and are happy with them. Around here, they are a "standard".
You might check around the 'net for reviews and comparisons. Since I've been using mine, I don't even think about needing or wanting anything else.

yes me weight is enormous! we big guys rock - right jeff?

i looked at strobo flip - seems ok for bench work although i do worry after those strobo stomps.. i am thinking i will try that turbo-tuner after all. with strobo flip i can't figure out how i would use it on live gig to tune between things or attach it to my big loooong chain on floor board >- jangle box- bigsby volume/tone -> amp

I have my SF on top of my amp usually, sometimes on the floor next to my Ernie Ball VP Jr.

I had heard a lot of great things about the strobo-stomp when they came out, even tried one out.
I'm surprised to hear that yours haven't held up.
I don't know about the track record of reliability for the turbo-tuner but they have a guarantee. The Turbo-tuner and the TU-2 have similar specs, features. The Boss is about $30 cheaper.
Happy hunting!

Another happy TU-2 user here chiming in, fwiw they're considered a standard around these parts as well.. I've seen a lot of the big wigs using them on tour, too.
