Kinks Cover: "Picture Book"

Post by lyle_from_minneapolis »

This one is by The Kinks, something I want to put in the OurStage competition for Covers. Any help on the mix or production would be welcome. Thanks!

Very nice cover, Mark. I'm pretty partial to the Kinks. What acoustic did you use?

Thanks Stan. I used an Epiphone 12-string, and also an Alvarez Yairi 6-string. I know Ray played his Rossmeissl-designed Fender 12.

Dave also played an electric in their recording...I might add that, but I sort of liked the stripped-down acoustic sound.

For such a great album, Village Green was really a poorly recorded album. Wish they had the same sound quality on that one as they had on Lola vs Powerman.

So true. Have you heard the remastered version of it?

Ray's voice is hard to emulate IMO, but you did an admirable job on it. It also sounds good with the stripped down version, sans the electric. The Epi 12 sounds very good as well.

Cool!

I guess I need to avoid overthinking recordings and mixes...this whole thing took me about three hours. It helps that it's a really short song. I'm going to try to keep working faster!

Thanks Scotty, your post astounded me.

Top marks, er, Mark!
An American?! Singing a Kinks song?! Whatever next?!!! etc
Excellent Davies-isms in the vocals too.
Thing is, it's a bit faster than the original!

Thanks Mark! Yeah, what's with an American covering Brit songs?? :D

Actually that speed is probably just perception due to different playing style...I matched the tempo to the original when I started it by putting the drum track together. About 124 bpm...I think their stripped down version gives it a sense of moving more slowly, but we both end up at 2:34.

My old painting teacher used to say that every artist needs two people: one to put the brush in his hand and make him take that first awful swipe, and one to stand behind him and take away the brush when the picture is done.

Great vocal nuance, solid production, a worthy vessel for your competition.
Love it Mark. Call it done. :) and good luck! If you win you deserve it.
