John Entwhisle's Rick issue

John Entwhisle problem with his rick in 1964 and why he switched to a Fender Jazz

"I was trying to find something I could play. I felt comfortable with the Rickenbacker, but the neck warped, and it started sounding very strange, so I changed to a [Fender] Jazz Bass.

Too bad there weren't any Rick lutheirs in the UK back then that could have helped him out.
He liked the rick but the early RM1999(4001S) had issues with warping. 60's Ricks have very delicate necks & truss rods.

He ended up using a mapleglo 4005 from 1968-1970 and a Lightshow from 1971-1974. Obviously, he learned to be careful with Rics when he bought the 4005.

Pete Quaife had a similar problem with his RM 1999 in 1966. The Kinks were playing a show in a hot venue, and the humidity caused the neck to warp.

Perhaps the clubs that The Who played at got too hot at times and the 1999 couldn't take it?

The question is, why did CS's fare so well by comparison?

Simply because every bass was different, some did fine and some wouldn't take it. It was the same with the 70s basses and still the same now... (to a much lesser extent)
Eden.

CS seems to me to always have been more of a tinkerer, and probably had a lot less money that The Who for quite a while. He might not have had the luxury of switching premium basses at will, hence learned to tweak a truss rod!

Speaking of old RM's, I caught a special on VH1 Classic the other night called Pink Floyd - Which One's Pink? And the first half hour or so had Roger's RM all over it. Just a heads up, it is re-airing (i think) this Thursday.

That is the accepted fate of his RM, yes. It is not explained in the documentary, though. Wish it was.

Wow. Whose idea was THAT for a video?
And an RM is not a cricket bat. Ever.
