This is actually a pretty darned cool clip for me, as they both break out Swedish made Hagstrom guitars. The bass is looks to be the 8 string (which I have), which was the first production 8 string bass - or so I've read. Ric apparently showed one at NAMM prior but didn't do production models till later.

The guitar looks to be a Hagstrom Concord, or maybe the guitar had another name. The bass with the same body is the Concord and looks just like it. I have one of those too. :)

In addition to Ric basses, I also have a bit of a Hagstrom collection. Those single coil pickups have a great sound. The bass humbucker has a good reputation too, as they were used in Guild's like the one Jack Cassidy used. I also have an early 70's bass with the humbuckers, but prefer the single coils.

Wow, that brings back memories. The Somthers Brothers Show was never to be missed at our house.

Oops, I mangled a name. It is Jack Casady (not David Cassidy's father).

A second correction. The Guild Starfire Hagstrom pickups were actually single coils - which makes sense.

The guitar that Tommy plays is a sunburst Hagstrom Viking. The bass version was indeed called the Concord.

The 8 string bass played by Dick Smothers was called the H8.

Hey, He's playing my bass!

One of the best things about H8s is that you can use TI Jazz Flats for all eight strings!

Sounds good, Todd. I didn't realize that you also had one of them as well. Your H8 looks a little prettier than mine does.

Yep, I used one on a cut on an album way back in 1972 and have always had a soft spot for them. Other than some very light pick marks on the guard, this one is mint and looks like it came off the line last week, rather than in 1968. It wasn't cheap, but the idea of being able to have an unusual and fairly rare, 40-year-old bass that has do dings or scratches anywhere on the neck, headstock or body and no corrosion on it was too good to pass up.

Well, your bass actually looks a lot better than mine (truth be known). I acquired it from ebay, so it doesn't look as pretty as my 4001S - which is a bass I've always owned.

Apparently only 2249 of the H8's were made between 1967 and 1969.

Here's a shot of Jimmy Hendrix and the Experience with Noel Redding holding one for the shot:

Looking at the Acoustics reminds me of a Doors concert where there was a stage full of them. They even had a stack of 4 on each side of the stage for PA
Loud and clear sounding.
