I’ve been collecting a few Beatles and Rickenbacker related magazines from eBay recently and saw this feature by John hall identifying Paul’s “other” Rickenbackers. The magazine dates from Jan 1996.



I’ve seen some references to a 4004 and 5 string 4003 on the RRF, but has anybody ever seen a photo of these basses, either with or without Paul?

Maybe John Hall has a pic or two in the vaults???

There has been a picture floating around here that shows the headstock a a 4001 FL. I have never seen the 4003/5 JG or the 4004. He also has the 4001C64 and C64S.

The author refers to a lukewarm relationship between Rickenbacker and Paul. I'm hoping that since the article was written in 1996 that relations have improved.

It is a quite well known roadie but he's managed to discredit himself in recent years rather nicely without help from anyone. We have a good relationship with Paul and his staff these days, especially since the "Driving Rain" recording sessions in L.A.

John, Isn't that the album he was recording when you gave him the 4001C64S? I think the track was "Spinning on an Axis".

That's the album, but we were there during the recording of "From a Lover to a Friend".

Do you have a story about when you gave him the original bass?

I read the article before I saw the link for a "readable" version. D'oh! I didn't realize that McCartney influenced the 4004 series. That's a neat bit of trivia. I also wonder if he still has the specially made 4003. That would be interesting to see.
